Spotted in the wild above the toy aisle: Madurai spelling out "Friendship" for Hub Network's Friendship Headquarters.

It shares the banner with a herd of ponies and the entire Littlest Pet Shop, and it's still the first thing you read.

Any script that can hold its own against that much eyelash is doing its job.

The Works Progress Administration paid artists to make posters, and at least one of them is still earning its keep.

Sabler Titling Condensed Light takes its cue from a WPA poster and the poise of Art Deco, with stems that narrow politely as they approach the baseline.

It now comes in three widths and more than sixty alternates, which is a generous wardrobe for letters that already look dressed for the evening.

Fashion magazines, gallery catalogues and anything priced without decimals will know what to do with it.

The capital T has brought its own elaborate undergrowth.

In Germany, a museum panel reproduces the mid-11th-century Sacramentary of Lorsch, with interlaced vine ornament and spaced Roman capitals. Its German text notes “Gold- und Silbertinten”—gold and silver inks.

Superhero posters ask a lot of their type: carry the title, a dozen marquee names and the end of a decade-long saga without looking smaller than the heroes.

Wide capitals are good in a crowd. Even a crowd that can lift buildings.

Spotted in the wild in a Hawaii drugstore, where we stopped for sunscreen and left with a font sighting.

A lightly modified Pauline sets "Truffle" on Skinny Cow's dark chocolate bars, bringing a little ballroom posture to the candy aisle.

That's the job of high contrast: making a 130-calorie candy bar look like it has dinner reservations.

Spotted in the wild on a grocery store shelf, again — Aviano putting in a second shift, this time announcing STEWED across a row of Del Monte tomato cans.
Same font, completely different job, no complaints either time.

Wedding stationery has a way of making everyone's handwriting look better than it ever was.

This script looks like the product of years of calligraphy lessons, then turns out to be remarkably easy to set, which is the most forgivable kind of deception.

A tall x-height, flag-shaped terminals and long, flame-like strokes keep it moving across the page with an air of quiet royalty.

Shown here in Medium, well suited to invitations, save-the-dates and the thank-you notes you have been meaning to send since June.

A military campaign, rendered in handwriting with better discipline than most.

“Sherman.” appears beneath a Civil War-era portrait of General William Tecumseh Sherman at Shiloh National Military Park in Tennessee. The precise copperplate is period handwriting: elegant, unhurried, and entirely unconcerned with modern legibility standards.

Spotted in the wild on a kids' music CD — Blue Goblet doing its hand-drawn, wobbly-in-a-good-way thing on Slugs & Bugs: The Videos, Volume 1.
Exactly the kind of charm you can't get from a font that takes itself too seriously.
