Visited the Center for Puppetry Arts this week and got to meet some of my favorite childhood characters! Big Bird, Kermit the Frog, Bert and Ernie, Grover and Elmo, Gonzo and so many more. This museum houses a large collection of Jim Henson Work, and it is incredibly fascinating as a children’s book illustrator, and somebody who has worked in early childhood education for so long. As many of you know, I am a huge fan of Sesame Street and PBS Kids and everything they have worked so hard to create. The impact that these characters have had on childhood for generations is truly something to be behold.

Art is for all ages and all stages. Some of my favorite classes are the ones where people come in with doubts about their abilities to create something and by the time they leave, they are impressed with what they realize they could do. These art for older adults classes in Red Bank in conjunction with The Chattery are always a wonderful way of not just hanging out with my neighbors but also bringing creativity to a typical Monday afternoon. Throughout these classes, I always hear grumbles and doubts, but I’m always very pleased by how those doubts turn into joy as the class goes on.

We had a fantastic time learning about Impasto paintings yesterday at The Chattery! One of my favorite parts about these art classes is the community that comes together. People often walk in as strangers and throughout the course of two hours, learn their commonalities and share stories, leaving inspired and always with a smile on their face.

This is my favorite quilt in the world. My graduation quilt that my mom made for me. She had this gorgeous pattern that she wanted to use and we spent a lot of time picking out batiks for this. It is incredibly loved and was in need of a little repair in some spots so I sat down yesterday to stitch a few things back together. My favorite thing about this quilt is when you look at it up close you see something very different than when you look at it from a distance.

Getting ready for a big preschool art day next week where we are going to be making Salt Dough Nature Stones. All you need are three simple ingredients: flour, salt, and water.

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1/2-1 Cup water

Each batch makes about six stones this size (5-6”) -everyone was and if you wanted to do smaller ones for ornaments it would make quite a bit more.

This dough will last for a couple days sealed in the fridge, or you can use it right away. You can either let it air dry or oven bake it for faster results.

Let the kiddos paint or color them with markers when they’re dried.

Did you know you can create your own watercolors with food scraps, natural dyes, and spices/seasonings? These were made with coffee grounds, strawberries, and turmeric. Absolutely, it is so easy to go get a set of watercolors for the kids, but if you’re in a pinch or want to explore creating your own, give it a try. ☕️🍓⭐️
