Cherokee Traditions Through my handcrafted jewelry, ribbon skirts and accessories, I am sharing my Cherokee heritage with my children, grandchildren and others.

I am incredibly thankful for the resilience of our people. It is our responsibility to pass on our traditions.

Déjà vu but at least on a much calmer level to last week. The tent survived but we are wet. If Mother Nature would have just given us 45 more minutes it would have been perfect. All in all it was a great day with some wonderful people. We will get home a little earlier than expected but we will be back tomorrow at the Cherokee Fall Festival in Vonore at The Sequoyah Birthplace Museum 😊. Hope to see y’all there!!

Cherokee Traditions will be there again this year in the same location between the cabin and the museum along the path. We will have ribbon skirts and ribbon shirts, jewelry, hair accessories and our fun amigurumi! Come visit us and enjoy a great weekend!!

Beginning Saturday, September 12th in Tennessee, the annual Cherokee Fall Festival at Sequoyah Birthplace Museum gets underway, bringing Cherokee culture, food, music, dance, crafts, and living history to Vonore. The 35th annual event runs September 12–13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Tennessee’s only tribally owned museum, which has served as an educational resource since 1986. Guests can watch the Warrior Dancers of Ani-Kituhwa, meet Cherokee visitors from North Carolina and Oklahoma, and see blacksmithing, 1700s Cherokee life, the 1800s Acorn Printing Press, and Civil War demonstrations. At 2 p.m., a battle reenactment will portray Thomas’ Legion at Motley Ford. You can also visit the reconstructed dog-trot cabin, see Cherokee Elementary School posters, meet Miss Cherokee, have your name written in Cherokee, and watch adult blowgun competitions. Fry bread, Indian tacos, drinks, and other food will be sold. Admission is $10 adults, $5 ages 13–18, free for 12 and under, or $25 for a family of four, with Tellico Lake nearby.

What a way to end the event. In the last little stretch, we had a horrible wind and rain come in. We’re most of us completely soaked. Several tents were destroyed, including mine, but all in all it was a great event. And at least I have my happy little ghost from A Cherokee Basket to keep me company. Stay safe y’all.
