One blow to the head, one slit throat, one stab to the chest would have quickly killed him. But instead he suffered humiliation, abuse, lies, scourging, ridicule, a long arduous journey to Golgotha to be crucified between two common criminals. The crowds who laid down palm branches a few short days ago and called out Hosanna “God Save Us” were now jeering at him. Little did they know, at that moment He was doing exactly that, Jesus was saving mankind from sin and death and making a way to be restored in our relationship to God. His perfect atonement paid for our sins. As we sit in the pain of Good Friday may we remember the perfect sacrifice and darkness of the day. And may it make the victory of Easter a more joyous day knowing sin and death have been conquered by our risen Lord.
