Susan Van Norstran Art

Susan Van Norstran Art 5 years ago a sea shell started my journey into painting. While shelling I would "see" things in the shells. I asked my sister to paint what I saw.

She suggested that I get some paint and do it myself. This is how I learned to express my vision.

The business of everyday life has gotten in my way of pursuing my passion. One excuse leads to another excuse to put off painting.

Going down that path just leads to further frustrations and anxieties.

So I finally quit making the excuses and started to paint and found my piece again with this lovely piece of Swan Pond.

When I look at this painting I have a feeling of peace and serenity. What does it make you feel when you look at it. Post your comments below.

Being at the beach isn't always beautiful sunny days. If you are lucky enough you can watch the storm form and approach.

Even though I was disappointed that the weather wasn't perfect for shelling, I took a moment to enjoy the storm. The force of nature full of energy, power, and beauty.

In life we have days that make us feel bright and sunny and days that feel dark and dreary. But if you didn't have the dark and dreary feeling days you can't appreciate The good days to the fullest.

Even dreary days have something to offer. Look for that " silver lining " and of the storm you are going through and use that energy and power to find the bright spot in your future.

When you are facing a difficult situation, or just feeling like you can't see the end of the tunnel. Step step back and look at it at a different angle.

That's just what I did while walking in my backyard. I saw this tree, leaning, looking oh so ordinary and and thought meh, nothing special. I walked around some more and looked up and the light that was hitting it transformed that tree into an amazing kaleidoscope.

How you look at things color your world. You can either see dark and doom or you can see color and light. It's your choice.

How do you "choose" to see your world? Straight on in black and white, or at an angle where you can see all kinds of possibilities?

With summer just around the corner it has got me thinking of the beautiful sunsets here in East Tennessee.

This is a painting of the area we call South of the River. It is part of Watts Bar Lake.

There's beauty all around us you just have to open your eyes and look. Even on your worst days if you just look you will find something in nature that will refresh your soul.

I am looking forward to spending the evenings watching the sunsets this summer. What are you looking forward to?

Reflecting on my new project. After the initial block in you reflect on where to lay the next layer of paint, and on the scene that you were looking at.

Sometimes it's hard jumping into the next layer of paint, fear of failure. But when you don't think about it and just pick up your knife and start putting paint where you know it should go...trusting your instincts…. magic happens!

When I'm facing the fear of where to put the paint I just some paint down and I find the fear disappears.

Taking some kind of action, good or bad, is better than sitting on your laurels...where nothing happens. How do you face your fears? Straight on or wait for a catalyst? Comment below please.

An early morning walk brought me across this scene of the sun dapling through the leaves onto the bottom of the glade.

The play of light was just so riveting I had to stand there a minute to look before I even thought to take a picture.

isn't it amazing how the play of light can change and ordinary scene into something magical?

There isn't much more idyllic than ponds with cattails. The slow moving water and the fluff from cattails create a feeling of peacefulness and comfort.

This is another aspect of The Swan Pond area. It's an area that creates the ideal fodder for nesting materials, food for the animals, and beautiful scenery for our eyes. .travel

I grew up here and the smells, sights, and sounds makes me feel at home.

The buttery feel of the paint while you are mixing colors is so soothing. It's like walking barefoot through a thick bed of moss.

As I develop the different hues I begin to get that feeling of expectation that comes with a new love. Each painting is a new experience that brings its own emotion that I fall in love with.

When there is so much chaos going on in your life and you are spinning your wheels to get everything accomplished….you find you are suffering from anxiety because you just need a minute…..a minute for yourself.

When that happens, stop everything. Take that "minute". If you don't you will burn out.

This is a 20 minute painting of a sunset on Watts Bar Lake.

When I paint I can block everything out except for the colors and shapes. And that my friends, brings back focus to my life.

What do you do you ground yourself? Please comment below!
