Reclaimed - Exploring North Florida has provided me a new perspective on my somewhat local landscape. I did not realize how incredibly diverse the ecosystems are just hours away from Miami (where I live). A coastal marine forest that I had not thought existed here in Florida lives on the edge of the ocean slow being reclaimed by the sea due to massive erosion. Giant live oaks fall onto the shoreline and get slowly dragged out to sea.

I really like to find subjects that aren’t noticed and elevate them into something else. Using a long exposure can mislead the viewer into thinking conditions of the moment were actually calm and serene when they were actually the opposite. Intense wind gust and on and off again rain made capturing this a challenge. I had to shield the camera and tripod from the wind in order to stop the vibrations and the rain. My tiny umbrella provided just enough protection to capture this. Through the chaos of the moment the calmness appeared on the back of my camera.

Standing on the beach in the early morning after a couple of overcast and stormy days was refreshing. The sun broke through for a few hours that morning. I found myself on the beach wondering how to best capture this. The beach on Amelia Island is basically featureless. With that in mind, it became all about an expression of light and color. Using an exposure time of about 5 mins created an image that beautiful washed the morning light and colors together.

New Day - 2020. Taken just before the sunrise. The lighting conditions were very interesting because the days before were completely cloudy and stormy, no sun to be seen. This morning the sun seemed like it’s was going to breakthrough. There was a brief couple of hours that barely it did until the stormy conditions returned. I decided to process this one in B&W to help minimize the composition to just be mostly about the light and contrast of the conditions. The time in between the early morning darkness and light is so brief. I wanted to convey that sense of being in that moment of transition of night and day.

Timing - Slow breaking waves across the shallow beach characterizes the shoreline along Amelia Island, Florida. I loved watching the slow waves break so cleanly. I took about 20 or so image just to get this right.

New work coming out soon. We were contracted to produce a series of locally based images for the Ritz-Carlton hotel on Amelia Island in Florida. This is a preview of one of my favorites so far. I still have to return one more time to complete the job. Conditions were stormy and extremely windy most of my time there. Made shooting extremely difficult!

On Approach. This was taken as a part of my series for the Hasselblad Masters, Volume 6: Innovate. Using high altitude nighttime aerial photography as a platform to capture my series. I was at about an altitude of 3500 ft. from a helicopter 🚁 with doors off. There were airplanes ✈️ flying under on approach to land at a Miami International Airport. The experience of being up so high on a perfectly clear night was intensely beautiful. Seeing Miami this way really brought a new perspective on how to capture the city.

This was taken over the beach front of one of my favorite hotels, Faena Miami Beach. Their umbrella set up is always a bit random and not as organized as the others. I can always count on seeing something new when I fly over.

Pink Umbrellas - Flying high above South Beach the visual chaos of the beach umbrellas and crowds that one experiences at ground level, neatly organize themselves into seemly impossible prefect order. You can really only see this from high above looking straight down.

“Distance between your dreams and reality is action” words of advice as seen from the air. This was written in the sand in the lower right hand corner. I didn’t notice it until I start to process the file. These are the things I love to find. A small story that is part of a bigger one. Swipe right to see the enlargement.

Party Boats - This was one of the images that helped me win the #hasselbladmasters award in aerial photography. Taken during Columbus Day Regatta which marks the end of boating season down here in Miami. It’s a weekend of thousands of boaters gathering to party all weekend long. Amazing sight to see from above.

One of my favorite things about aerial photography is that the view from above turns the randomness of the crowd into something visually appealing. I really enjoy finding the order in the chaos through the editing process.

Hasselblad medium format sensors have a very high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), meaning more image information stands out from undesired background noise. Due to the combination of high SNR with larger pixel sizes, Hasselblad sensors can deliver up to 15 stops of dynamic range compared to around 12 stops on a smaller sensor DSLR. This allowed Hasselblad Master Jorge de la Torriente (De La Gallery) to shoot these clean New York City cityscapes at night, handheld, from a helicopter. In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Master Framer, Jeff Rodriguez. - Jeff is the co-owner of De La Gallery located in Key West, FL and Charleston, SC, AND the co-owner of the Art Warehouse located in Key West. - I visited Jeff at his Key West gallery where we talked about his wildly talented partner, photographer/artist Jorge de la Torriente, how they met, and how they turned a dream into a thriving business. - This episode was recorded on the 3rd of March, right before the shut down for COVID-19 began. - NOTE – Jeff and I recorded an intro on this episode that was recorded on Thursday, April 30th, to talk about the status of both galleries and how he is offering additional sources of income for digital photographers out there. - Listen to the full episode here: https://backyardsofkeywest.com/de-la-gallery/ PHOTO CREDIT = Jorge de la Torriente - - #delagallery #jorgedelatorriente #artwarehouse #jeffrodriguez #photographer #photography #photo #photooftheday #photographylovers #photographers #photographylife #photographyart #boating #hasselblad
Explore the X1D II here: http://bit.ly/hasselbladX1DII50c
Fine art photographer Jorge de la Torriente (De La Gallery) strolls through the forest outside of Charleston, South Carolina, where he discovered this oak tree brimming with a special fern that comes to life in the rain. Captured with Hasselblad X1D II and XCD 45. The 45mm’s moderate wide angle focal length provides a 35mm full frame equivalency, making it a perfect general purpose and travel lens. Hasselblad X Jorge de la Torriente (De La Gallery), Honourable Mention Captures Miami, Florida, USA APERTURE: F/8 CAMERA: Hasselblad X1D-50C FOCAL LENGTH: 45MM (XCD 3,5/45) See his feature here: http://bit.ly/FB_HBxJT “Most of the images in this series are purposely taken in the harsh mid-day sun with an overexposed look and feel to them. This emphasizes the feeling of being on the beach and helps to minimize the distractions of the harsh shadows. I find that the overexposed look allows me to saturate certain colors without creating an unrealistic oversaturated look, letting me put the focus on the lifeguard stand (each customized through a particular design or paint scheme that makes them stand out) in its particular location along Miami Beach.”
#MediumFormatMonday Hasselblad medium format sensors have a very high signal-to-noise ratio, meaning more image information stands out from undesired background noise. When you combine the high-quality signal-to-noise ratio of Hasselblad sensors and larger pixel sizes, Hasselblad sensors are able to deliver up to 15 stops of dynamic range compared to around 12 stops on a smaller sensor DSLR. Hasselblad Master Jorge de la Torriente (De La Gallery) shot these images handheld at ISO 6400 with Hasselblad H6D-100C. With Hasselblad's high signal-to-noise ratio and high bit-depth, he was able to capture amazingly clean images of the cityscape by night. Learn more here: http://bit.ly/FB_MFAdvantages
