Great Falls
Oil on Canvas 14.5x24" (37x61cm)
This painting is currently on view in the Hudson River Fellowship Exhibition, opening tonight from 6–9 PM at the Salmagundi Club, NYC. If you can make it, I’d love for you to stop by, the show is filled with incredible work by all the friends I made over the summer.
This piece depicts painting in front of the Great Falls, Connecticut. It’s an enlarged version of a sketch I made on a day I’ll never forget. I had never seen a waterfall of this scale before, and standing there, I felt completely overwhelmed by its power and presence.
Nathan, , and I excitedly waded across the river to reach the base of the falls. We painted there and swam out to the large overhanging rock shown in the painting. From there, we were able to crawl behind the waterfall, something I never thought would be possible. It was both terrifying and magical, watching the golden light filter through the cascading water. I could feel both the beauty of it and the immense, almost violent energy of the water.
While I was working on the original sketch, the water level began to rise. The flow slowly increased as we painted ,it was completely unexpected in what seemed like a calm, steady body of water. I started on a dry rock and ended up painting knee-deep in moving water.
That excitement turned to tension when we realized our route back had changed. What had been a narrow stretch of ankle-deep water was now a waist-deep, raging torrent. I was the last to cross and had my camera with me, so the stakes felt high. We couldn’t see the rocks beneath the surface, so we inched our way across, step by step, trying not to be swept away.
Crossing a gap of about 40 feet took 10–15 minutes, though it felt like much longer. Our ankles were shaking from the constant pressure of the current, but we all made it across safely. It was a very close call!
