Acrylic vs watercolor

Some lighthouse practice and experimenting with different media. I don't normally do much with acrylic, but I kinda liked it...?

Which do you like better?

Things I Wish I Could Tell 15-Year-Old Me About Art

1. Just do it- do it unmotivated, unnoticed, uninspired, without the best materials. Sometimes it will feel like work if you really want it. Like working out. Does it always feel easy? No. That's how you grow
2. Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Poorly (G.K. Chesterton?) You have to be bad at something first before you can be good at it. Be brave enough to be bad first
3. It is a Journey Not a Destination- You'll likely never feel like you "made it". There is always room for improvement. Isn't that amazing? Always more to learn!
4. Natural Talent Only Gets You So Far- are some people naturally artistically talented? Yes. I am not one of them. All of the artists I admire were not born master painters. They fought for it and worked at it. I've had the joy of seeing some of my online friends' skills explode over 5, 2, or even just 1 year. That's the proof to me that my efforts will pay off of I keep working at it
5. Don't Let Criticism Stall Your Progress- will some people look at your work at say "that's not very good". Probably yes. I have had that. But I'm not doing it for them. I do it for me. To connect with God. I do it for the joy of the journey and discovery. "You're not a good painter". Sure. Not yet. I refuse to claim that or accept that as an absolute. Where I am now is not where I will be tomorrow. Don't let others limit your capabilities

Today's plein air experiement: see what I can do with the back of the cover of my watercolor pad, dollar store watercolors, and a single brush that I'm not even sure is for watercolor

Honestly? I learned a lot. It was hard to get a full range of values with this palette, but I think I still captured the lighting in the scene. Can you tell there is a lake back there?

Better to start with cheap materials than to never start at all. Upgrade your materials as you can, paint as often as possible, and enjoy the process

Sorry I'm not taking any calls, I'm painting bark for the next two weeks ๐Ÿ’…

You never know when inspiration will strike as an artist. I was picking up sticks so I could mow my grass and I was intrigued by the texture of this bark. So I saved a few pieces and this is all I plan on painting for a bit. I'm learning so much from focusing on texture, exploring new techniques and tiny details. Follow along if you want to see more tree bark ๐Ÿ˜
