BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A MAHJONG HAND, CHECK THESE 3 THINGS.
Ever spotted familiar numbers on the card and thought, “That’s my hand!”… then noticed the parentheses?
Welcome to MAHJONG 101, Part 2: READ BEFORE YOU COMMIT.
Today’s three habits:
4️⃣ READ THE WHOLE LINE
Check each required group, the suit relationships, and every instruction in parentheses.
And remember: red ink on the card does not automatically mean Craks.
5️⃣ CHECK X OR C
X allows legal exposures before Mah Jongg. You do not have to expose.
C means the hand stays concealed until Mah Jongg. You may still claim the winning non-Joker discard to declare Mah Jongg immediately.
6️⃣ NAME YOUR GAPS
Compare the tiles you hold with the exact hand you’re trying to build.
For example: if your target requires a pair of 7 Bams and you hold one, you still need another 7 Bam. A Joker cannot complete that pair.
👉 YOUR PRACTICE:
Open your current official card. Choose ONE hand and explain:
• What groups does it require?
• Which suits will you use?
• Is it X or C?
• Which exact tiles are missing?
Work through unfamiliar details with a teacher or learning partner.
What would help you most: parentheses, colors, X/C, or identifying missing tiles? 👇
