I came across this little 19th-century watercolor at a local market and it immediately caught my eye. There was just something about it, the watercolor and gouache on paper, the dreamy Romantic landscape, and that tiny person walking at the bottom.
But that’s not even the crazy part. I started looking into it and found out it’s dated 1895. And then I realized the place in the painting actually exists.
It’s Montaigle Castle, near Dinant, Belgium, and the ruins are still standing today. I love that thought. Maybe this was painted by a traveler, someone who stood in front of those same ruins more than 130 years ago, just as I might one day. Maybe they painted it right there, maybe later from memory. I’ll probably never know.
And the more I look at it, the more I like the fact that the artist wasn’t trying to make the castle perfectly accurate. The castle almost feels secondary. What they really captured was the feeling of being there ( I wish I was an artist) the landscape, the ruins, the path, and this tiny stranger just passing through. A little piece of someone’s journey, found by another traveler more than a century later.
