The Over the Mountain Studio Tour 2022 would never have happened without Anne’s vision of what is possible. Thank you, Anne!
Wheel-thrown, high-fire stoneware, salt-glazed, and earthenware pottery. Ren & Pam Parziale have been making pots at Sycamore Pottery since 1972.
Ren says his early training was as a production potter within the tradition of early American folk pottery. Our customers enjoy hand-made objects. In a high tech world, objects made the old fashioned way are valued by people who visit our pottery, says Pam. We have been inspired by our travels to Italy and Sicily. The festive majolica glazes are a colorful connection to our American and European heritage.

My sculpture "Day 84" will be unveiled this Saturday October 5 at 3, a bit before the reception for sculptors, at the Washington Street Studios in Boliver/Harp[ers Ferry WV. The ceramic mural has been mounted on a wall behind the WSS Gallery, next to the kilns shed. I used earthenware clay from the Martinsburg brickyard, Continental Clay. The story by Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man & The Sea is the inspiration. I wanted to create the moment when Santiago hooks the Marlin. This is my depiction of the values of patience and persistence, important attributes for an artist. Ren fired the sculpture in an electric kiln at Sycamore Pottery.
I would like to introduce our team of talented artists who have been working diligently on designs for the Evitt's Run Park mosaic project.

Start the new year off right! Recycle your peanuts and angel poo. This local potter will re-use them, gladly and with thanks!
This seems like a brilliant way to try to remember all the birds in our neighborhood. Ren makes medallions from red clay, I consult the Stokes Birds Books, have a picnic with glazes, and then we fire them in our small kiln. (That Mountain Bluebird would be lost in West Virginia). The entire flock will be at the

It was 1987 and I was asked to make a ceramic medallion almost 3 feet in diameter for the Jefferson County War Memorial. Ren and I went to see how it was withstanding almost 30 years of snow, ice, rain, and sun. I made the sculpture of white stoneware. The weather, in fact, has enhanced the design. Roses surround the Great Seal of the USA, emerging up the left side to full blossoms at the top, then they began to decay and the petals fall away.
I wanted to make something big out of clay. The guys at the nearby brickyard were more than happy to supply some local clay for this endeavor.
Kiln firing # 269 in the big kiln. Ren's first kilnload in this sweetheart was in 1980. Tuesday, it was 95 degrees outside and the kiln went 21 hours to 2400. In reduced atmosphere for 6 hours, that is, closing off the orrifices to prevent oxygen from entering. This forces a chemical change in the glazes that makes the colors brigthter, deeper, luscious. He keeps detailed notes for each firing.
Everyone is planning to join us!
