Worlds of Fun open in 1973, as Kansas City's premier theme park with over 60 brand new and exciting things to do. Designed by famed MGM Art Director turned park designer, Randall Duell, Worlds of Fun is themed after "Around the World in 80 Days" by Jules Verne, the five themed worlds still include, Americana, Africa, Europa, Scandinavia and The Orient. Worlds of Fun has been home to 12 different r

oller coasters, including the defunct but beloved Zambezi Zinger and Orient Express. Today, Worlds of Fun features over 100 attractions, and is home to Prowler, ranked as on of the best wooden coasters in the world.

Can you see the same criss cross wooden detail on the station in both photos? Both of these photos were taken from similar locations and the station /queue house hasn’t changed much
in 50 years.

Today is national mascot day! Most older folks like myself first think of Sam Panda, Dan’l C**n and Grrrtrude Gorilla when it comes to Worlds of Fun mascots. First introduced in late 1974 (they helped light the plaza lights that year), they would be synonymous with the park until the early 1990’s.

These characters would often take part in events outside the park itself including mall openings, Christmas events and annually made a trip to Research Hospital to greet kids admitted there.

On Today's date in history, June 16, 1884, the first modern roller coaster opened. The Switchback Railway, built by LaMarcus Thompson would open at Coney Island, and throttle riders at an amazing... 6 miles per hour. To celebrate a look back at Worlds of Fun's 13/14 coasters over park history. The reason for the inexact number is because it depends on whether you count Screamroller and Extremeroller as two separate coasters or not.

Of additional interest, Mamba has re-opened today operating with two trains for the first time this season!

1) Zambezi Zinger (OG) 1973-1997
2) Schussboomer 1973-1984
3) Funicular/Silly Serpent 1973-1986
4) Screamroller 1976-1983 (1988)
5) Orient Express 1980-2003
6) Extremeroller (1976) 1983-1988

Happy ! I am really enjoying this I hope you guys are! So today by request we have a Brittanica Map. What exactly is a Brittanica Map you may ask? Located in Scandinavia, right next to Viking Voyager stands a little stand that was originally built for Encyclopedia Brittanica as a sales/preview location. Today it's the Swedish Sipping Chalet.

But back in the 1980's the location not only had complete sets of Encyclopedias available for preview, but they also handed out these neat little paper park maps! This one is from 1982. This was the first year for River City and River City Rampage. River City is today's Patriot Landing, and River City Rampage is today Fjord Fjarlane, but was located where... River City Grill is today.

Ronald McCoy who worked at Lucky Lindy’s shared this photo of one of the restaurant’s signs that he has! This is very common among longtime WoF ambassadors and I love to see it as it allows history to live on!
