Rose Ellis Folky Fine Artist
~Based in Kansas~ My passion for the arts grew on a farm outside of the Grassroots Arts Capitol of Kansas - Lucas, population 400.

Intrigued and inspired by the bold and bizarre art in my community, I began what would become a lifetime of learning and creating art. Since then I've spent years developing and creating my own unique and often bizarre art. My aim is to learn and create a wide variety of visual art media so that I can help others discover and develop their passion for the arts.

I've shared the initial inspiration behind "Mother's Back," but have kept what inspires me more so now mostly to myself. "Why?" you may ask. Because this newfound inspiration came from the heartbreaks, elations, failures, successes, losses, and wins that I experienced along the way. To sum it all up in a bit of cliché, the greatness behind this beauty came from its journey, not from its superficially pretty destination. (Although, I am dang proud of how purdy she is, too)

So how does one share their personal story with the world in a way that even remotely resembles how inspirational it is to oneself? When discussion of showing this piece at Monarca began, I started taking the time to gather my thoughts, photos, and documents from its creation.

Then I sat on it.

I'm a visual artist, a reluctant writer, and exceptionally good at procrastinating sharing deeply personal clichés. But I can be brave and do hard things. The times I failed, broke the unbreakable, didn't have enough money, used the wrong kind of paint, showed up late to (and then inevitably lost) the competition-- these all made the successes, repairs, knowledge gained, and eventual wins even sweeter.

Here's a little backstory about the origins of the painted skulls that I thought would be fun to share.

After a hard breakup in 2022, I moved out of Kansas City and onto my uncle's property in The Flint Hills. There I spent a lot of time wandering around, taking in as much as I could of the scenery while relearning the land. I marveled at the deep roots that my family had established there. Almost 150 years of family history in one place is quite remarkable.

While I wandered around the land, I collected quite a few souvenirs. Bones, glass shards, cool rocks, and feathers became reminders of a timeless place for me to hold onto and to share with others.

After moving away, I decided it was finally time for me to start working on the skulls as I intended to. I spent a of time researching and working on properly cleaning and prepping them for their new life. After this I carefully painted them in my own design depictive of life on rural Kansas lands.

I'm delighted with the finished results and how they allow me to share these special experiences with others in a unique way.

-The pictured skull artworks are on display and available for purchase at Monarca Art Space, MÁS throughout the month of October
