WIP: sketching the beginning of a new piece in pastels

Brigid was the Celtic embodiment of Imbolc during the first days of February. The midpoint between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. We typically think about this holiday as Groundhogs Day in the United States (Germanic origins). This holy day is celebrating the promise of warmth returning. Folks often use this time to assess firewood supplies, and to check in on their environmental surroundings. How far along is the snow melt? Are there spring bulbs appearing? A fire motivating us after a sleepy cold winter, she forges a path forward into spring.

One of the arts affiliated with Brigid is poetry (I will remember Renee Good during this year's celebration). She is also a symbol of protection through winter's final days, a guide to healers, planter of seeds, and she reflects our heart centered appreciation for baby animals in the spring. Brigid carries the light within🕯️ Reminding us to walk forward with our chest high.

📢 Eastern Monarch Population Update 📢

Are you in need of some good news? The latest survey from Mexico reports the eastern monarch butterfly population occupied 1.79 hectares this winter, a 99% increase from last season’s 0.9 hectares. While this number fluctuates, it remains below the recommended 6-hectare threshold for a sustainable migratory population highlighting the need for continued conservation action.

Read the announcement at https://monarchjointventure.org/blog/eastern-monarch-population-2024-2025

Monarchs face ongoing threats, from habitat loss to climate change, emphasizing the need for collaborative conservation action. You can support monarchs by planting native milkweed and nectar-rich flowers, participating in community science, supporting pollinator-friendly practices, and contributing financially to conservation organizations. Join us in protecting this iconic species!

"If I wrote an autobiography Florida would ban it. And I would not change a thing. I love my life. It has been passionate and messy, scary and full. After all, I am a real soul. What have false ideals ever done, but silence that love? Or make me worship shame. Anyone can recite laws, and formulas, and rules. But have you ever challenged everything that told you not to exist, just to birth wild compassion? You see I might just offer even one person a glimmer, which I too yearned for in darkest times. When my light almost faded. My life is not for the faint of heart. But when I finally go, I hope to be an ancestor you can call on, who's heart is gentle, so you'll never.ever.feel alone. Imagine that, being banned."

Recently I was invited to join a neighborhood art club with some friends and tonight was our first gathering. We all just played around in our own mediums, while we talked about life and worked out the logistics of the club. I'm excited to see what we create together! We're going to have fun. Here's the little piece I made during our couple of hours just chatting and planning.
