Did you know?

Long before modern wildfire management, many Indigenous communities used controlled burns to care for the land.

These intentional fires helped prevent larger wildfires, support healthy plant growth, and maintain balance in the ecosystem

This knowledge, passed down through generations, is now being recognized as an important part of land management today. Understanding this reminds us that Native knowledge isn’t just history—it’s still relevant.

Did you know that many of the places we now call National Parks are located on lands that have been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years?

These lands are not just scenic—they are sacred places, sites of history and ceremony, and homelands with deep cultural meaning

Long before they were designated as parks, these areas were lived on, cared for, and stewarded by Indigenous communities. In many cases, the creation of National Parks meant that Native people were forcibly removed from their homelands, and access to these sacred places was restricted.

Today, many tribes continue to maintain connections to these lands—through tradition, advocacy, and cultural practices.

Understanding this history helps us see these spaces differently:
Not just as places to visit, but as places with stories that deserve to be acknowledged and respected.
