🥒 Nope, I Didn't Forget to Pick This One! 😂
I purposely left this pickling cucumber on the vine WAY past the eating stage. I wanted it to get as big, fat, and yellow-orange as possible because this one's not for pickles—it's for next year's seeds! 🌱
When you're saving cucumber seeds, you don't pick the cucumber at the normal green stage. The seeds inside aren't fully mature yet. Instead, you leave it on the vine until it's completely overripe and changes color, usually yellow, orange, or even brownish depending on the variety.
Next I'll:
🥒 Cut it open and scoop out the seeds and their gel.
💧 Put the seeds and pulp in a little water and let them ferment for a few days. This helps remove the slippery coating around the seeds.
🚿 Rinse them really well, getting rid of the pulp and poor-quality seeds.
☀️ Spread the good seeds out and let them dry completely for about a week or two.
✉️ Then they'll go into a labeled envelope and be stored somewhere cool and dry until planting time next year.
So while that little cucumber beside it is perfect for eating, that big ol' yellow one has a completely different job. It's growing next year's garden! 🌱💚
