Three Contra Costa County organizations have been awarded funding in the latest round of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts:
Veteran Comic Con, Hercules $10,000
East Bay Center for the Arts, Richmond $50,000
Richmond Art Center $25,000

The NEA is pleased to announce the first round of grants for FY24 to organizations in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico and Literature Fellowships for creative writing and translation.

Position Description
OASIS Center International, a 501(c)(3) working with at-risk, low income schools in Contra Costa County, is looking for a part-time Watercolor Instructor to teach weekly lessons in a high school classroom environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in watercolor painting and teaching, with the ability to inspire and engage students of diverse backgrounds. This position involves instructing individuals within the court and community school system, fostering creativity, and providing a positive and supportive learning environment.
Responsibilities:
● Develop and Implement Curriculum: Design and implement a comprehensive watercolor painting curriculum that aligns with the needs and skill levels of high school students.
● Instruction: Conduct engaging and informative watercolor classes for high school students, utilizing effective teaching methods and adapting to various learning styles. Provide constructive feedback to students to help them improve their skills and develop their artistic abilities.
● Class Management: Maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes creativity, respect, and collaboration. Manage class materials and resources efficiently, ensuring a safe and organized learning space.
● Communication: Communicate effectively with students and school staff regarding class schedules, progress, and any relevant information. Collaborate with other instructors and staff to enhance the overall educational experience.
● Professional Development: Stay informed about current trends, techniques, and innovations in watercolor painting and art education. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills.
Qualifications:
● Must have a passion for the arts and under-served communities
● Compassionate attitude and strong understanding of youth development
● Ability to work with diverse student populations, including those within the court and community school system.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
● Solid understanding of classroom activities and teaching best practices
● Must have reliable transportation to get to and from the school
Required Level of Education:
● B.A. Degree and above (preferred)
Supplement Information:

● Tuberculosis screening conducted prior to employment

Storyline/Synopsis:
A Boarding School Play is a humorous and poignant exploration of the clash and harmony between tradition and modernity, set in a contemporary prep school that was formerly a boarding school on the Navajo Reservation in 2001/2002. With the backdrop of the events of 9/11 and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, four very typical teenage girls participate in a traditional song and dance group to reconnect with their Navajo heritage. Along the way, they encounter the spirited opinions of their teachers, the ghosts of the school’s history, and the visions of their future in this uplifting and powerful story.

ROSIE 18, Female. Navajo. A pageant queen and admires Radmilla Cody.

KAYLENE 18, Female. Navajo. Comes from a long line of warriors and unsure about her future. Strong familiarity with the Diné-Bizaad language is preferred for this character.

SHAWNA 17, Female. Navajo. Applied to Dartmouth and strives to lead like Annie Dodge
Wauneka.

JOLENE 17, Female. Navajo. An athlete with Olympic dreams and hopes to meet Billy Mills.

Ms. B 65-70, Female. A traditional Navajo woman who leads the Song n’ Dance Group.
Strong familiarity with the Diné-Bizaad language is preferred for this character.

Ms. K 40s, Female. An educated Navajo woman.

Audition/Submission Instructions: Prepare and submit BOTH of the following.

A 1(one) minute self-tape monologue and a 1(one) minute self-tape sharing something funny that has happened to you.

Submissions for the 2024 Creative Youth Awards are now open through December 13, 2023! The Bay Area Creative Foundation is awarding $100,000 to Bay Area high school artists in creative writing, dance, film, music performance, original music, photography, and visual art.

In addition to the opportunity to receive a cash award, every qualifying artist who submits to the CYAs will receive a free year-long membership to MasterClass and will be included in our online Creative Gallery.

Submissions will be capped at the first 2,500 received. Students are limited to 1 entry. There is no cost to enter. Read our FAQs & Official Rules here.

Bay Area high school artists can submit their entry through the links on our website.
