Grateful for a fabulous — and busy! — summer conference with the Indiana Choral Directors Association. I had the opportunity to:
- Present my interest session on the “Intersections Between Gospel Music and European Choral Traditions”
- Co-present repertoire in a mentorship session for early career conductors (including “One by One” by Diane White-Clayton) AND collaborate on a spiritual solo
- Participate in a conducting masterclass with Dr. Jeffrey Redding
- Join the ICDA Board as a District Representative

ALSO! Extremely proud of our recent DePauw choir alum, Taylor Perez, who also presented an interest session on her research, “Approaches to Decolonizing Choral Curricula”. She gave an impressive presentation as she now navigates the professional realm of music education. As my colleague Dr. Mary Martin once said, she truly embodies grit and perseverance!

I had a tremendous time guest conducting the Charleston Gospel Choir on Saturday! We paid tribute to the late Ms. Lucille Simmons Whipper, and performed dynamic gospel works by Walter Hawkins, Aretha Franklin, Andrae Crouch, Bishop Paul S. Morton, and more. Grateful for the invite! 🌴🎶🙌🏾

This was a perfect concert closer! Dr. Diane White-Clayton’s “One by One” is a joyful reminder that we all need each other — and that meaningful progress doesn’t happen overnight, but step by step.

“One by one, step by step, we’re gonna make it!
Let go of hatred, let go of your fears.
Letting go, yet holding on.”

This spring, Vox Animae enjoyed performing Dr. Khyle Wooten’s “The Dream Keeper”, an impassioned setting of Langston Hughes’ poem. The text reminds us to hold tightly to the aspirations that guide us through the harshness of the world.

I highly recommend this gorgeous work to treble choirs everywhere. Full recording on YouTube — https://youtu.be/Tc_pN4_bP9s?si=PRUrwFuREuEYZ_Su

“Nan jistis, nan renmen, au nou manje yon bon tchaka!” 🍴🥣

The DePauw Chamber Singers had a blast learning and performing Sydney Guillaume’s “Tchaka”, a work celebrating Haitian culture and unity through a vibrant, rhythmic depiction of a communal dish.
