THERE’S AN ENTIRE WORLD 650 FEET UNDER KANSAS. 😳
You’re standing in Hutchinson.
Flat prairie.
Open sky.
Nothing particularly strange.
But 650 feet below your feet?
There’s a massive underground salt mine.
And part of it is a museum.
For more than a century, miners have been cutting through ancient rock salt beneath this part of Kansas. The mine uses enormous columns of salt to support the underground chambers.
Then visitors started going down there.
At Strataca — the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, you can descend into the mine and explore enormous underground chambers, old mining equipment, exhibits and even ride a tram through the workings.
But here's the part that makes this place REALLY weird:
The underground environment is also used to preserve things that America doesn't want to lose.
Film.
Records.
Archives.
Historic materials.
Hundreds of feet of rock and salt above them.
The salt deposits themselves formed roughly 275 million years ago, when this part of North America was covered by an ancient sea.
So think about that for a second:
🌾 Kansas above you.
🧂 275-million-year-old salt beneath you.
⛏️ A working mine carved through it.
🏛️ A museum underground.
🎞️ And pieces of America's history stored down there.
You could drive across Kansas your entire life and never realize there's an underground city-sized world beneath the prairie.
That's Hidden America.
🇺🇸 THE AMERICA YOU DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED.
👇 Be honest: would you take the elevator 650 feet underground?
HELL YES. TAKE ME DOWN. ⛏️
NOPE. I'M GOOD UP HERE. 😂
