MUSIC BUSINESS WISDOM WEDNESDAY

We have got to keep our eyes on the laws around the country and prevent actions like this. With all of the growth in the music sector in Huntsville, we must be diligent to keep our freelance businesses protected and watch incoming scams from people who want to exploit us.

Here's what California recently did that is a BAD MOVE for freelance musicians writers, etc. LINK IN COMMENTS.

A new California law is supposed to help millions of freelancers by dictating that they be hired as employees.

“It makes sure that the 1 million independent contractors in California get the wages and benefits that they deserve,” says the law’s author, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez.

But freelancers like musician Ari Herstand tell John Stossel, “You’re thinking you’re helping us, but you’re not … this could single handedly crash the California music economy.”

He points out that he’ll now have to put every musician he hires “on payroll, W2 him, get workers’ comp insurance, unemployment insurance … pay payroll taxes. I also have to now hire a payroll company.”

Musicians aren’t the only ones hurt.

The law targeted rideshare companies like Uber. Politicians claimed that the companies abuse drivers. But now many drivers object to the law, saying that they like being independent.

At first, the media were also big supporters of the law.

“Gig workers’ win,” wrote Vox.

But once the law passed, “Vox Media … cut hundreds of freelance jobs,” reported CNBC.

Assemblywoman Gonzalez was unapologetic. “These aren’t jobs," she sneered.

Herstand’s answer: “You're preventing us from doing what we want to do.”

On 18 - 20 October, 2023 Music Cities Convention will be travelling to Huntsville, Alabama, USA for its 12th global edition.

The event will feature presentations, panels and roundtables to showcase the latest best practices exploring the use and importance of music in the development of cities all around the world. All of the above will be combined with several live music events and exciting networking opportunities.

The three-day event follows the publication of the Huntsville Music Audit and Strategy that aimed at creating a more dynamic music environment, from education to creation, production and performance, in a way that strengthened Huntsville’s growing economy.

During the two convention days, we’ll discuss topics such as global music city policies, music & economic development, music and technology, music and education, the role of music in future cities, the night time economy, supporting musicians, city & place branding, music tourism, music & real estate, music for community building and more.

No truer words for an artist.

The times that I lost sight of this is when I believe that my music was least impactful and least successful. I began trusting in what people thought and less in the ability to create music that was meant for something special. We gotta always remember that music is art (or should be) and is always subjective (or should be). We are creators, created with a great ability to do something that most hope to recognize that they can do in their lifetime. The wealth is in enjoyment, the feeling it brings to people, and the times it get people through….The times it gets you through. If you make any money from it, know that that is great , but is the icing and not cake. Focus on the creating and being in a good environment to do so. Trust this, and I’ve been doing this a looong time…you wanna make money , but from something you love. It is the only way you will truly be fulfilled. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

some of what we can talk about:

-virtually all things guitar (technique, tone, electric, acoustic, notes of the fretboard, fingerpicking, flatpicking, pedals, amps, instrument care, chord voicings, etc)
-advanced ukulele concepts (traditional hawaiian techniques, jazz chords, strumming/picking patterns, melody playing, articulation, etc.)
-being a musician (obtaining skills, gig prep, collaboration, songwriting, leading a band, learning music, ear training, performance etiquette, etc.)
-live sound (choosing and acquiring gear, running an efficient soundcheck, communicating with musicians, mixing, dialing in effects, console basics, cables, etc.)

Welcome Kam Jones, a soul unfazed by the madness, he carries a gentle demeanor while harboring a powerful rock voice. You’ll love him if you don’t already!

Rising from the remnants of a small, previously industrialized town in Southern Tennessee, Kam is paving his way as an up and coming artist.

With inspiration derived from the bluesy, soulful ripples of the Tennessee River mixed with the angst of an over-worked millennial constantly striving to be worthy of the knowledge granted to these last generations, Kam has constructed an instantly identifiable unique sound.

He is playing a solo show this Thursday 6/16 at The Electric Belle at Stovehouse, come out for a bit!

Who is GYPSY SOUL?
Gypsy Soul is a creative artist and free spirited Singer who embodies soul through different genres of music. A native of Huntsville, Gypsy Soul has been performing since the young age of 3 years old. The songstress has performed in many well known venues in the local and surrounding areas such as The Camp, Yellowhammer, The Alabama Music Hall of Fame just to name a few, making history in becoming the first black woman to sing at all 3 venues. Gypsy is known for her intricately smooth rifts and memorable renditions of everyone’s favorite covers. She is an artist, performer, singer/songwriter, and overall provider of music for the soul.

Here's an excerpt from his BIO:
Born in Peru, raised in Miami FL, and now residing in Huntsville, Tomás Gorrio brings a positive driving force to any music scene. “Huntsville has been one of my favorite places to visit on my tours, and now I get to be part of the growing community. There’s a ‘nerdiness’ here that I definitely connect with”. He’s toured 49 states, Canada, and Japan during his time in his IndieRock band, TGTG. He focuses on a more melodic style with dancy rhythms and strong lyrics for anyone who needs a change from their “stale routine”. Catch TGTG as well as his new band, Peruvian Coin at a show near you!

What is a “listening room?”?

Listening Rooms are similar to house concerts in that they are small venues that provide an intimate listening experience. Listening room venues are typically separate spaces associated with existing businesses like art galleries, book/music stores, coffeehouses, and recording studios.

We are pleased to partner with Purple19 to present The Casual Pint’s first listening room experience at today’s Village Music Fest @ Providence Town Center

Out of respect for the artists, we will not be serving out on the patio, but ask you to come inside to place your food and drink orders.
