On Saturday, August 29, I appeared in crown and sash at the Plymouth Waterfront Festival, which took place along the harbor area in Plymouth, Massachusetts, which is of course one of America’s most historic towns. While at the festival, I stopped by the Rotary Club’s booth, where the attendants talked with me and graciously got a group photo with me (thank you, Rotary Club!) I told them of my various community service/volunteer activities during my queen year, and we explored areas of possible overlap between those activities and the things that Rotary Club does. Also while at the festival, I saw the usual tourist sights, shopped at vendor booths, and dined on the widely varied food vendor offerings

This evening (August 25), I appeared in crown and sash at the United First Parish Church in Quincy, MA where a group of approximately 15-20 volunteers, including me, worked a 3-hour evening shift at the host church’s Prison Book Program. This is a charitable program that for many years has sent out free books to inmates around the country who request books from the program. Some of the requests are for novels, arts and crafts books, or games and puzzles. Other books pertain to vocational training that will assist the inmates on their eventual return to society. I have volunteered here once before, in July. I was assigned to the invoicing table, where I examined book requests, checked the suitability of the books being mailed, prepared mailing slips, and wrote short notes that will be sent with the books. Some of the letters we received from past recipients indicated their strong appreciation for the book program. More information can be found here: www.prisonbookprogram.org.

On Saturday (August 22), I appeared in crown and sash at the Vineyard Farm in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. While there I went blueberry picking, visited the small animal farm, walked within the sunflower field, and went shopping in the main store for the farm’s plain yogurt, which came highly recommended. I am very appreciative of Zelane and the farm’s staff for inviting me to visit, and for their hospitality in showing me the farm and taking pictures. Seeing the farm’s numerous small animals (goats, piglets, guinea pigs, rabbits) was especially enjoyable!

Today I appeared in crown and sash in my hometown (Hull, MA), at the beach a short distance from my house. I accompanied about two dozen other volunteers and the steering committee for the Hull Beach Committee Action Group (BCAG), in a joint effort to clean up trash from the beach. The BCAG holds these volunteer events periodically. I have participated in this volunteer effort twice before. I scoured about 15 blocks’ worth of beach – roughly corresponding to the event’s starting place to a little past the street where I live - and picked up all the trash I could find. My strategy was that small, plastic, brightly colored refuse is the most important to pick up, as this type of material is the most likely to harm marine life. Living in a maritime environment for years has made me especially appreciative of marine life, and the value in protecting it.

Today I represented All American Pageants in crown and sash in my hometown of Hull, Massachusetts, where I marched in a town parade celebrating the US’s 250th anniversary. The parade route was 1.3 miles long. I walked the parade length, but there were vehicles in the parade too, all representing many different groups and organizations. I had my own entry placement in the parade, thereby representing myself and the pageant, but right in front of me in the lineup was the Andrew Verrocchi Great American Marching Band. They were very good and I got to listen to their music the entire parade length. The parade was very well attended, and I saw some of my neighbors. At the end, there was a Field Day celebration held in the athletic field near N Street.

Today I represented All American Pageants in sash at my home church (First Presbyterian Church of Quincy), where myself and a volunteer group of about a dozen church members packed lunches as a charitable donation for Father Bill’s Housing Resource Center, also located in Quincy (39 Broad Street). This entity is a shelter for the unhoused, which also provides other beneficial resources for the local community. Our group packed approximately 100 lunches, which were then promptly delivered to the resource center. More information on Father Bill’s resource center can be found here: https://helpfbms.org. The church volunteer group has done this before, most recently in February.

Today I appeared in crown and sash at the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), for a volunteer shift. Approximately 12 other volunteers did the shift with me. I have volunteered at GBFB a few times previously. Of course I was happy to do it again, and so assist with the tremendous problem of food insecurity. Today’s tasks included, first, the sorting of lemons from large palettes into shipping boxes. 7,240 pounds of lemons were packed and prepared for shipping in this manner (it is GBFB’s custom to deliver accurate statistics such as these, at the end of each volunteer shift). As a separate project, we also prepared boxes and bags, and unpacked crates of canned and boxed non-perishable food, so that the next shift can quickly pack it assembly-line for shipping. GBFB is a major distribution center for pantries all over eastern Massachusetts, so the food packed today will go to families in need.

Today I appeared in crown and sash at the Blue Winds Farm (Stratford, NH) at their season closeout event. Blue Winds Farm is a real working lavender farm which is located in the rolling countryside of southeast New Hampshire. Different species of lavender are grown there, harvested, and some of it distilled to make oils for soaps and lotions. Bumblebees were swarming all over the lavender plants, which I am told is part of a pollination process. The lavender season in NH is very short, and today was their summer closeout event. I am grateful to the farm for the pictures they took of me. While at the event, I picked my own lavender bouquet (upper right hand picture), and I also shopped for lavender oil soap, ate barbecue food, viewed the distillery apparatus, and listened to live music.

Today I appeared in crown and sash at the Weymouth Food Pantry in Rockland, Massachusetts. There I donated two full bags of non-perishable food to their pantry so that it can go to families in need. It is a privilege to be able to help, and to select and provide food that I think will be both tasty and nutritious. My food pantry visit is the latest in a series of volunteer efforts I have been making this year regarding food insecurity.

Today I appeared in crown and sash at the Blueberry Festival at Charlton, Massachusetts. This was a carnival/fair-type event with various activities, vendor booths, and entertainment for all ages. It was run by the Charlton Arts and Activities Center, which is a local community center. While at the festival, I ate some of the food on offer, visited the numerous arts-and-crafts stands, and of course purchased some blueberries.
