Crafting Under the Influence occurs once every month in different bars around Houston (so it's, in effect, presented all over Houston). Projects are usually seasonal in theme. Previous projects include:
paddle fans
adult-themed coloring books
bottle cap art
moustache straws
dead president masks
coasters
Bars are ideal locations because the alcohol is the perfect social lubricant to ease inhibiti
ons and anxiety. Events are primarily advertised through this Facebook group page and the twitter account, which then gets circulated through word of mouth. It's open to the general public, so absolutely anyone old enough to be in a bar can attend. My vision is to bring the Houston community together by performing a common craft project (thus establishing a common ground) that helps them relax, unwind, and explore their creativity while they drink and socialize. Crafting is very therapeutic and can help re-calibrate the brain and exercise the creative muscles. The project helps relieve stress, encourages social interaction, introduces participants to different types of crafts, and provides a fun, unique activity in a public (neutral) setting. While I started this in 2010, 2015 is actually the first year it's stuck to a monthly schedule so that it can gain momentum and grow. The event typically averages about 15-30 participants (highest attendance was 30 for the adult-themed coloring party). This project was started because no one else was doing anything like this. And I enjoy sharing my love of crafts with everyone.
