There are some people who don’t just enter your life—they make room for you in theirs.

When I returned to this city, Rita Hughes was one of the first people who made me feel like I belonged. She didn’t treat me like an outsider. She welcomed me. She loved me. She supported me. She saw me.

Today, I don’t cry for Rita. I know God has done her better. He has released her from pain, restored her strength, and welcomed her home.

I cry for me.

I cry because I won’t feel her embrace again. I won’t hear her laughter from backstage. I won’t get to witness her extraordinary talent light up another stage. I won’t get another conversation, another hug, another moment with a woman who gave so much of herself to so many.

Rita’s legacy is not just in the roles she played, but in the lives she touched. I am one of those lives.

Thank you for making me feel seen. Thank you for your kindness. Thank you for your friendship. Thank you for your love.

Take your bow, Queen. You’ve earned your standing ovation.
