Houston Theater District

80 years!! The history of Houston's Theater District runs deep. It's hard to image all of the first dates, anniversaries, and nights out with friends that have taken place within this Downtown neighborhood.

Congrats to the Alley Theatre! Here's to the next 80!

“It’s beginning! Do you want a new theater for Houston?” - Nina Vance, October 1947

This week, almost eight decades ago, our founding Artistic Director Nina (pronounced Nine-a) Vance began the process that would soon result in the creation of Alley Theatre by sending 214 penny postcards. This was the exact amount of pennies she had in her purse on that day!

Happy Dolly Parton Day, Texas! On 9/25, a date chosen as a clever nod to her 1980 smash hit "9 to 5," we're celebrating Dolly's extraordinary artistry and the joy she brought to every stage. Cheers to the performers and patrons who bring the same essence of joy to the Houston Theater District.

Do you love the drama? Houston Grand Opera's Butler Studio kicked off a grand season of music last weekend with Studio Showcase. We love this heartbreaking duet from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin — full of emotion, tension, and all the drama opera does best.
