Luis Pablo carved this mother and baby chameleon from a single uninterrupted piece of copal wood. No assembly, no joins. The mother arches protectively over her young, and the two exist in completely different color worlds, amber and orange on the mother, cobalt blue on the baby.
In the Zapotec toná calendar, the chameleon is a spirit guardian assigned at birth. An animal that sees in two directions at once and moves with total patience. A fitting choice for a mother watching over her young.
Luis Pablo’s candle is on the base, as always. What animal is your toná?
