Today we filmed the last bit of footage for our promo video. I don’t have any behind-the-scenes photos from today (I need to do way better at taking pictures of our process, y’all), but here are a few pics of our fearless director Cody Kenner () at some of the locations in our video.

I’m so excited to release the finished product to you, because it is gorgeous. But honestly, I’m prouder that it’s DIY as heck, from our team of three really resourceful people who all work in and out of our skill sets on a regular basis, with barely any budget (am I hinting at an upcoming fundraiser? Yes, yes I am!), but enough creativity and elbow grease to create beautiful things. You’ll get a formal introduction to all of us after the video is released, but for now, just know that Cody, Meghan and I are rocking this thing 🔥

Here at the Freedmen’s Town Project, we’re more the kind of folks to wish you “Happy Emancipation Day!” than “Happy Independence Day!”—but this year, it feels more discordant than usual with the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border. As supporters of emancipation—of freedom from bondage—we’re stricken at the photos we’ve seen of migrant people stuck in deplorable conditions while their fates are taken out of their hands.
——————————————

Perhaps the most significant lesson of our research for this project has been the importance of knowing the history of the ground on which we stand. Today, standing in Emancipation Park, we’re reflecting on how this tract of land was bought over a century ago by freed slaves, and despite gentrification, it is still here and more beautiful than ever. We’re also thinking that before that, this land and all the land along the border was once Mexico, and before that, the home of the Indigenous people of the Americas.

The eras of human history change people’s categorization to their benefit or detriment, change where they are free to go and how it’s acceptable to treat them. But we remember that those are simply eras. The humanity of a people never changes. And standing on this ground that means freedom, we hope that this era is a short one, and the humanity of migrants here and around the world is restored, respected, and kept sacred.
