LetterScapes

LetterScapes LetterScapes are about "Seeing things differently." LetterScapes are black and white photographs that feature the photography of Texas artist Jan Johnson.

I have taken hundreds of images throughout the state of Texas that resemble letters of the alphabet... combining them to create a name or word. Johnson photographs objects seen by most people every day and highlights their resemblance to letters of the alphabet. Each photograph must be interesting and have the ability to stand alone, and when combined create a completely additional meaning.

LetterScapes is one aspect of Johnson’s photography. “I enjoy LetterScapes for many reasons but one is that when people choose from the available “photo letters” then it becomes collaborative art.” Collaborative in the sense that Johnson has taken the photographs and the customer chooses the combination to create a unique work of art. She is currently working on a series of posters that include “Houston A to Z” and a book “Texas A to Z”.

White Linen Night in the Heights is a neighborhood-wide event held the first Saturday in August. Like the event that inspired it in New Orleans, event-goers wear white linen and take to the Heights to celebrate art, culture and community.
