Preparing for a studio visit is an opportunity to look through my art, and make mental connection to the frame of mind and intent behind each piece or series. As a recorder of time and environmental artist, some are loaded with meaning. This is the series Flooded Memories- the art of Hurricane Harvey that was exhibited in the Woodlands with artist and Deborah Deep Mouton. I harvested the water during the hurricane, and flooded the canvases with it, layer after layer. H2O molecules are all made equal; its the atmospheric dust of the hurricane that came down with the rain, and is forever imprinted into the paintings. My intents were to capture the chaos that Houstonians endured, and have my art be my contract with myself to help others get their lives back.

Sometimes the universe answers artists- I had researched this collaboration between Rauschenberg, Trisha Brown and Laurie Anderson that made its debut in 1983 NYC- when I was there working , but that I missed!
It’s the piece that inspired me to get beyond the canvas, make wearable art, move with it, and do performance art. The recreated it, and brought it to Houston. Thank you to the museums and Art organizations in Houston who bring vibrant experiences for Houston artists to keep producing for the world.

Catrina Monarca FLEW to SF with the BRAIN Center team at UH to present the live performance and brain capture with AI at the NSF Accel Net conference of neuroscientists from around the world. Held at UCSF Med School, and staying up until late working on the AI model with the PHD Candidates and Rodrigo Velasco who came from Mexico City, it felt like I was at University all over again! Wearing a brain machine interface under the crown that I designed to cover the cap and not interfere with the brain signals, the session was a brain capture that triggered the AI model that we worked on to help tell the complex and beautiful story of the Monarch butterfly.
Thank you for leading in the field of neuroscience and the arts, and trusting that I can deliver a touching performance at the intersection of art and science.

Catrina Monarca debuts in Houston to the public this Sunday Nov 2nd at Discovery Green, Downtown Houston, for its formidable Dia de los Mu***os celebration. The parade starts at 4pm, I will perform at 4:30, so plan to be there by 3:30. It’s free to the public and the lineup will delight and entertain. It should be great fun for kids and the whole family! We have been talking since January of making this happen, and the time is here! First seen in Paris at the Zoom Art gala, and the grounds of the Louvre… and now in Houston for the first public performance, with collaborators and music by fellow Rice owl Don’t miss out on the packet of native milkweed seeds that we will be giving out! After all, Catrina Monarca is performance environmental art that brings empathy and awareness….that we in Houston can assure the survival of the Monarch butterfly by acting together to make Houston the most productive butterfly Waystation.

Preparing to take Catrina Monarca to UCSF to the Accel Network International Conference- funded by the NSF- to get closer to the science behind the music, art and movement healing the human brain. This Wednesday at UH, at the Jorge Pardo Foley of the UH Public Art collection, you can come see the forerunner of what the Dr Jose Contreras-Vidal team at the BrainCenter will take to SanFrancisco in Nov. We will be ready at 3:30pm with the brain machine interface that I wear to record my brainwaves which will trigger the AI model we are working on. It is open to the public!

Inca Stones is a series of collage and paint on archival paper, inspired by witnessing first hand the finesse and precision with which the Incas fit every stone into each other in Machu Picchu, Peru. I’m enthralled by the way that indigenous peoples interpreted the space-time continuum, and counted deep time. The only thing I left out from the collages are the adorable llamas that meet you at every corner of this true destination of awe and wonder. This piece is going to a young couple. I hope that they too live in awe and wonder of what we are capable of.

Sometimes the universe drops on your path Roberto Lugo, a gem of a man, artist, son, father, fiancée, thinker, potter, poet, ceramicist, and now friend. In his first visit to Houston he conquered our collective hearts with his humility, intelligence, authenticity. A fellow Latino- son of Puerto Rican smart and hard working parents, growing up in hard neighborhoods in Philadelphia, and with a truly gripping story of becoming an artist. He makes us proud, and is opening the doors in high places for our unique narratives of life and art to be heard. He makes my case, that we are producing american patrimony in the arts, with excellence, heart and soul. You can see his work at and you should run to see it. and thank you for bringing him to Houston and inspiring Houston artists. Thank you for the lovely celebration for Roberto. Until soon my friend and Amanda!

My studio is my safe space. Children need to be safe. My favorite studio visits are with children, and my very favorite are with my grandchildren. I honor the memory of the children we have lost, in Kerrville the 4th of July and in Minneapolis today. Our hearts miss these children, even if we didn’t know them. It’s called abstract love and real empathy. Calling all artists, all mothers, all grandmothers- you, the Maya Warrior Queens for all life on the planet…let’s honor the memory of our children who should be making art in a safe space, by loving, caring and looking out for all children. ❤️

It’s a good day when women lead the conversation on making more inclusive cities & arts districts, on centering women in the design process, in giving women the voices they deserve. Thank you and AEA’s Catalina Casas for inviting me and my co presenters Maya Shpiro( Copenhagen) and Sue Bell Yank(LA) to speak on RECLAIMING SPACE: HOW FEMINIST AND COMMUNITY-LED SPATIAL PRACTICES CAN SHAPE MORE INCLUSIVE CITIES. We were a large contingency of Houstonians there- so happy that all our arts districts were represented.

Our first Houston performance of Catrina Monarca was for the volunteers who gave the project their time, skills, talents and love for us to take it in December to debut in Paris at the art gala. A Houston-centric and Houston made project, it aims to raise awareness of the pivotal role Houston has played in the lifecycle of the Monarch, and the critical role we must play in revitalizing the numbers, which are in deep decline. At the end of the performance we gave out milkweed plants to all who came, ready to be planted in a sunny spot, to attract the Monarchs who are already on their way from the Sierras of Michoacán, to lay the eggs, die, and begin the cycle again. A transnational symbol of resilience, the art of the Monarca lives another day. Thank you to all who came! Stay tuned for more performances in Houston and other cities.

Continuing the quest to understand the life and death of the Monarch butterfly for the continued development of the Catrina Monarca Project, this time took us to Michoacán México, to the Monarch Biosphere Reserves. El Rosario delivered more delicate beauty than my imagination and research could fathom. They need us to help grow the ecosystem that will allow them to procreate and flourish, starting in Houston and the Gulf Coast region. Most importantly, we need them.

Artists for Understanding convening in Houston was presented by the President’s Committee on the Arts, only 4 days before Inauguration. How can art counteract hate and division? Fellow artists and I were panelists who represented a beautiful swath of artistry in Houston and got to tell how and why we do art. Thank you for listening and bringing your big heart to Houston. This ray of hope seems years ago. It’s a new world, but I will still bet on art. your leadership matters! Thank you for trusting me.
