Meredith Memorial Foundation The Meredith Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that serves Houston's LGBTQ+ community. Thank you,

Joe Meredith
Founder/Executive Director

The Meredith Memorial Foundation is a community-focused, 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to honoring LGBTQ+ lives through compassionate remembrance and inclusive celebration. We recognize that family is not solely defined by blood ties but also by intentional connections, deep friendships, and unwavering support. The individuals we honor, our chosen family, were the architects of these vital support

systems, building communities of care and acceptance. They are remembered as sources of strength, joy, and unconditional love by all who were fortunate enough to call them kin, regardless of formal ties. Their legacies are not defined by shared last names but by the indelible mark they left on our hearts and the countless lives they enriched. Memorial displays provide a meaningful and tangible way to honor the life of a loved one while serving as a central point of connection for family and friends. Each display that we create is thoughtfully personalized with photographs, urns, and curated elements that reflect the individual’s life, values, and interests. These services are designed to be inclusive and respectful of all backgrounds, cultures, and belief systems, creating a welcoming environment that supports reflection, remembrance, and emotional healing. Historically, this level of care has not been equitably available to all communities. This has been particularly evident among LGBTQ+ individuals, who have often received fewer supportive services and whose lives were not consistently memorialized with the same level of dignity and recognition. In response, the organization arranges and conducts personalized Celebration of Life displays for LGBTQ+ individuals who pass in hospice care. These complimentary services are specifically designed to honor each life with dignity, especially for those who might otherwise receive minimal or no memorial acknowledgment. For many within the LGBTQ+ community, chosen family is the only family we have. Too often, individuals find themselves alone in hospice without the support of traditional family structures. Our mission is to ensure that no one is left without care, connection, or remembrance during life’s most vulnerable moments. A central part of our work is raising funds to cover 100% of cremation costs for LGBTQ+ individuals that pass in hospice who have no family, which includes unadopted young adults who have aged out of foster care — ensuring that every life is honored with dignity, regardless of circumstance. Our guiding principle is simple: Honoring Lives with Compassionate Remembrance and Inclusive Celebration. We support individuals and their communities by helping them make informed, meaningful decisions when planning end-of-life arrangements. Through our work, we also provide complimentary, personalized Celebration of Life displays for LGBTQ+ individuals who pass in hospice care—creating safe, welcoming spaces where loved ones can gather, share memories, and begin the healing process together. The Meredith Memorial Foundation’s Board of Directors includes Michael Garcia, Diana Welborne, and Joe Meredith. Collectively, they bring more than 40 years of continuous experience in the mortuary industry, providing a strong foundation of knowledge, stability, and professional expertise. Their diverse backgrounds contribute valuable perspective and leadership to the organization’s mission. Joe Meredith serves as Executive Director, overseeing daily operations and program implementation. Based in Houston, Texas, he has established strong relationships with local hospices and remains committed to serving the needs of the Houston area. The work of the Meredith Memorial Foundation extends beyond professional service; it is rooted in a profound sense of purpose and compassion. Many individuals in hospice care experience isolation and diminished support during critical moments of grief and transition. Through its programs and services, the Foundation seeks to restore dignity, foster connection, and provide meaningful support. We invite you to join us in advancing this mission, raising awareness, and helping ensure that every life is honored with compassion, respect, and care.

DON’T be your child’s bully.

For many children, coming out is not about seeking attention or creating conflict—it is about finding the courage to be honest about who they are. Yet countless young people remain silent because they are afraid. Afraid of rejection. Afraid of disappointment. Afraid of losing the love and acceptance they need most from the people closest to them.

That fear becomes even more painful when it comes from family. The world can be difficult enough, but when a child believes that their parents may respond with anger, shame, criticism, or rejection, the burden can feel overwhelming. The very people they turn to for comfort, protection, and unconditional love become the people they fear losing the most.

Many parents see coming out as a difficult conversation. For a child, it is often one of the most terrifying moments of their life. They have likely spent months or years wrestling with self-doubt, anxiety, and uncertainty before ever speaking a word aloud. They are not asking for approval of every choice they make—they are hoping to be loved for who they authentically are.

A parent’s response can leave a lasting mark. Acceptance can become a source of strength, confidence, and healing. Rejection can become a wound that follows a child for years. No child should have to choose between being honest about who they are and keeping the love of their family.

When a child comes out, they are offering something precious: their truth. They are trusting the people they love with their most vulnerable self. In that moment, what they need most is not judgment, anger, or fear—they need to know that the love they have always counted on is still there.

Mental health affects every community, every family, and countless individuals whose struggles often remain unseen behind silence and stigma. The Walk for Mental Health Awareness – Houston stands as a powerful reminder that no one should have to face those challenges alone. Through advocacy, fundraising, education, and compassionate public engagement, the organization helps support Greater Houston agencies and programs that provide critical mental health services to those in need.

More than a fundraising platform, the Walk for Mental Health Awareness – Houston creates space for honest conversations about mental illness, emotional wellness, and access to care. By encouraging open dialogue and community collaboration, the organization helps break down barriers of fear, shame, and misunderstanding that too often prevent individuals from seeking support and treatment.

Every step taken in support of mental health awareness is a step toward compassion, healing, and hope. Together, we can build a stronger community where mental health is treated with the same importance, dignity, and understanding as physical health — and where every person feels seen, heard, supported, and valued.

I encourage organizations throughout the community to support and donate to The Walk Houston, and to build a strong relationship with Founder, C. Patrick McIlvain, in order to further his mission of promoting mental health awareness, expanding access to care, and creating lasting positive change for individuals and families across Greater Houston.

Pride matters because there was a time — and in many places, there still is — when simply being LGBTQ+ could cost someone their safety, dignity, or even their life.

Gordon Chad was not a headline. He was a 28-year-old college student, a son, and a friend. He stopped at a convenience store before a Thanksgiving gathering and never made it there. After two men learned he was gay, he was kidnapped, tortured, beaten, sexually assaulted, and ultimately murdered before being buried in a shallow grave.

Stories like his are why Pride exists.

Pride is more than parades and rainbow flags. It is remembrance. It is visibility. It is a declaration that LGBTQ+ lives have value, deserve protection, and will not be erased by hatred or violence. Pride gives a voice to those who were silenced, honors those we have lost, and reminds the world that no one should have to live in fear for simply being who they are.

For the LGBTQ+ community, Pride is about survival, unity, chosen family, and the continued fight for equality, dignity, and love without fear.

NEVER give up the fight.

She has an identity. She has a name. She is more than just a label.

As we learn the name of a beloved member of our LGBTQ+ community, Persia Amara Conway, let us come together in peace, compassion, and remembrance. Let us share stories, hold space for one another, and heal together the way a community of chosen family should.

May we honor her life with dignity, kindness, and love — remembering that every person deserves to be seen, known, and cherished for who they truly are.

Pride Month is a celebration of love, authenticity, courage, and community. It is a time to honor the generations of LGBTQ+ individuals who fought for equality, visibility, and the right to live openly and proudly.

At the Meredith Memorial Foundation, we believe every life deserves dignity, remembrance, compassion, and celebration. This month, we stand with our LGBTQ+ community - uplifting one another, protecting one another, and honoring the beauty and resilience that make our community so extraordinary.
Happy Pride Month. 🌈 😊
