Yall help me congratulate the newest member to the 10th legion. My oldest, Avery Grace. 😭

Everyday with my girls is special. But this morning was extra. I’ve dreamt of this day for 6 years straight. I’ve just waited for the right time. Hunting, especially turkey hunting is something I do not want to push on my kids. I want them to fall in love with it in their time.

I knew the time was coming but didn’t know it would be this quickly. It started opening day of youth weekend. I had just gotten done accompanying a good friend and his little boy.

As soon as I walked in the door Avery wanted to know when it was her. Seeing the fire in her eyes, I made her a deal. That was “if I can find a 410 and you can shoot it comfortably and make an ethical shot, I’ll take it.”

Within an hour I found one. We rushed to the farm, and it was on. She shot well. First time ever shooting, I must add. So we went off to the woods. Nothing the first hunt. The next day we came very close. Fast forward to today.

Daddy put a bird to sleep at the farm last night. We left at 3 this morning joined with dad and my brother and setup in the spot the birds had been coming to. They started hammering super early. She was fired up! The birds flew down and shut up.

We figured they had found some hens. So we decided to move a little closer. We went just 200 yards and struck them. We quickly made a hide (one big enough to hide a small army.) it wasn’t 10 minutes and the drumming began.

In normal turkey fashion. Instead of walking straight to us. They decided to walk in right behind us. And I mean steps behind us. I was sure there was no way it would work. I’m so proud of Avery. Like a trooper she was still as could be and kept her gun pointed towards the road.

As if it was supposed to happen, those birds made a loop behind us and straight back the opposite way and right past Avery’s gun. She made the perfect shot. I cannot express the emotions of 3 generations of turkey hunters passing the tradition on to the next. It could not have been better. We were able to share it with my father, and brother, he was able to do most the calling and even get it on film.

Blessed is an understatement!
