HIFILM Panel: WHAT IS AN IMPACT PRODUCER?
This free HIFILM Panel--the first of a quarterly series of industry panels that delve into the many facets of local indie filmmaking--explores the importance of the IMPACT PRODUCER, a specialist who creates and manages social action campaigns, and are responsible for designing and implementing strategic impact and education strategies around social impact documentaries.
Storytelling has intrinsic properties – but what you do with that story is everything. Today, documentary filmmakers are reaching beyond the offer of traditional distribution on television or in cinemas to think about “Impact,” “Outreach” and “Engagement” campaigns. These are all words used today to describe the plans a film team puts in place to ensure that their film spurs change on an issue – where they are deliberate about who needs to see a film, what audiences need to do, and what partnerships, tools and resources are needed to reach the desired goals of the campaign.
HIFF welcomes three filmmakers who have worn many hats behind the camera; from director to impact producer, as they discuss the importance and necessity of impact producing to amplify and bring awareness to their various film projects.
📢 Added Spring Showcase Screening: 26.2 TO LIFE
Zoom over to an added screening of 26.2 TO LIFE 🏃💨
With director, Christine Yoo, in attendance, the film tells the story of members of the 1000 Mile Club, the long distance running club of the San Quentin Prison. These men train all year for this 26.2 mile race. For these runners, completing the marathon means more than entrée into an elite group of athletes. It’s a chance to be defined by more than their crimes.
Tickets available for an additional screening, Wed. March 27, 5:30pm at Consolidated Theatres Kahala!

Voice Acting: New Frontiers in a Global Streaming Landscape with the PGM VO List
This is the inaugural event to kick-off HIFILM, HIFF’s new Industry Hub of masterclasses, workshops, and panels to provide career development, networking, and pipelines programs for Hawaii’s creative content industry. The mandate for HIFILM is to explore pathways for fulfilling work in the industry and doing so from the Hawaiian Islands either on the ground or remotely.
In this first panel, we discuss the boom of Voiceover (VO) acting opportunities in the content streaming marketplace. In a move for more diversity and equitable representation, we will have a discussion with Edward Hong, the founder of the People of Global Majority Voiceover List or PGM VO List as it’s more commonly known. Joining him on the panel are working VO actors from Los Angeles, Hawai‘i, Malaysia and Singapore who are actively working remotely from their home studios. We also will discuss the founding of the PGM VO List, how the global pandemic was the catalyst, and the void that it filled in Hollywood, where content is king.
