This is Kou — one of Hawaiʻi's most treasured canoe plants 🧡🧡

From crafting canoes and calabashes to dyeing kapa, early Hawaiians found purpose in every part of this plant. But it's those stunning tangerine-orange blossoms that make Kou a showstopper in lei making.

We sat down with Ronson, a musician and lei maker at Nā Lei, to watch him string a Kou lei by hand and hear what draws him to this beautiful craft.

Known to the world as plumeria, this beloved bloom is not native to the islands, but is grown locally by farms like and . So, what makes it the perfect lei flower? It's sturdy stem threads effortlessly onto a needle, making it as easy to string as it is stunning to wear.
