DAC is excited to present a solo show by the one and only JEFF GERE, this January 4-27 in the second floor Courtyard Gallery!

Humans spend a third of our lives sleeping. What goes on inside our minds while we dream, and what does it look like? Jeff Gere, widely known as a master storyteller, has been hand-making collage art privately for decades. In “Dreams of Waking,” he reveals 50 collage images, most of which will be on view for the first time ever, based around this theme.

Everyone is invited to the First Friday Opening Reception on Friday, January 5, from 5:30 - 8 p.m. as well as a series of FREE Artist Talks with master storyteller and collage artist Jeff Gere on Saturdays, January 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

CURATOR'S PICKS: Gina Bacon-Kerr and Johnny Macas-Freire, the curators of the third annual DAC Holiday Invitational, share their picks over the next few posts to spotlight some art pieces in our current show that they love. Take a look! --> 👀

Gina: "Better by the Dozen" by Suzanne Wolfe. These gorgeous, elegant handmade ceramic mugs, many accented with gold, are available singly or as a set of 12 as the perfect holiday gift.

Johnny: "Yatta" by Esther Shimazu. The title is an expression of joyful cheer (like "hooray!" in Japanese, and the gleeful expressions of Esther's ceramic creations bring joy to those who see them... need we say any more?

The DAC Holiday Invitational will be on view during regular gallery hours from December 1-23, Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. All our exhibitions are FREE and open to the public!

CURATOR'S PICKS: Gina Bacon-Kerr and Johnny Macas-Freire, the curators of the third annual DAC Holiday Invitational, share their picks over the next few posts to spotlight some art pieces in our current show that they love. Take a look! -->

Johnny: "Botanical Abstract II" by Cyan Garma. A young, recently-graduated artist, Cyan has been making a name for himself in the arts community with his unique, lush, psychedelic style, most recently as one of the picks by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts from the Artists of Hawaiʻi 2023 exhibition.

Gina: "soundings no. 1 (kohola in a cloud of sound)" by Michelle Schwengel-Regala and Lisa Asagi. Look closely inside the copper wire cloud of this collaborative mixed-media piece, and you'll see a detailed little ceramic humpback whale. This piece carries an environmental message as well, according to the artists: it represents the nets of human-created sound that ocean-dwelling creatures must navigate in the modern era, and the effects of industrial noise on oceanic ecosystems.

The DAC Holiday Invitational will be on view during regular gallery hours from December 1-23, Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. All our exhibitions are FREE and open to the public!

Gina: "Hauʻukeʻuke" by Verna Apio Takashima. The exquisite, lace-like textures of this master artisan's work in hand-beaten kapa should be seen up close to be properly appreciated.

Johnny: "Ambiguous Gate: In or Out" by Shelly S.M. Miller (aka "How to Draw Trees"). The humor and fine detail of this piece make it impressive - also, it's a lot of fun to examine.

The DAC Holiday Invitational will be on view during regular gallery hours from December 1-23, Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. All our exhibitions are FREE and open to the public!
