"Departure From Diamond Head"
I created this painting for the Waikiki Yacht Club Dinning Room. It is based on the start of the Molokai Race and celebrates the Club's Involvement in the Pan Am Clipper Cup, and the Kenwood Cup events that they held from 1978 until 2000.

When I was sailing on Lake Erie as a teenager in the late 60s, Put In Bay Race Week was THE place to be every summer. Glad to hear it is still going on, and in fact, it has been happening all week around the islands near Port Clinton, Ohio.

Someone asked if my Facebook Profile logo/photo was from another artwork so I am posting a photo of my painting “All Clear” (acrylic on wood, 2020) part of which was used to create the logo.
The style of the work is something I came up with in 1969, while a student at the Dayton Art Institute. We were studying the work of Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) and he had a Cubist painting of sail boats that I really liked. That painting was the inspiration for what I ended up doing. In the early and mid 70s I produced quite a few paintings in that style, and a few years ago I started creating them again, in both Acrylic paint and Digitally, with some more modern changes.
“All Clear” was the first one I ever did with black sails.

Congratulations to the crews of the voyaging canoes, Hokule‘a and Hikianalia, that returned to Sand Island just before sunset last night, completing their successful 5,000 mile trip from Honolulu to Tahiti and back.
I was fortunate to be on the water 46 years ago, when the year old Hokule’a sailed past Diamond Head, completing her historic round trip voyage to Tahiti. The voyage confirmed that early Pacific Islanders successfully used traditional wayfinding knowledge to plan long-distance voyages with an intentional purpose, hundreds of years before the invention of navigational instruments. Since that day, Hokule’a has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles around the world with the purpose of bridging traditional and new technologies to live sustainably, while sharing, learning, creating global relationships, and discovering the wonders of this precious place we all call home.

Endeavour is a J Class yacht built for the 1934 America's Cup by Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, England. She was built for Thomas Sopwith who used his aviation design expertise to ensure the yacht was the most advanced of its day with a steel hull and mast.
In 1984 what was left of Endeavour was bought by Elizabeth Meyer, who undertook a five-year project to rebuild her. In 2006, she was purchased by Waikiki Yacht Club member, Cassio Antunes.

Fair winds and best of luck to Hokule'a and Hikianalia on their latest voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti which began today from Hilo. You can track the voyage here: https://www.hokulea.com/
My painting of Hokule'a, celebrates the return home to Honolulu, from her historic 1976 trip to Tahiti. The voyage proved that the the ancient Polynesians were able to travel long distances long before the invention of modern navigational instruments. Hokule'a, the 62’ , double hulled Polynesian voyaging canoe was built in 1975, and has since traveled throughout the Pacific and, in 2017, completed the three year “Malama Honua” voyage that took her around the world visiting 18 nations and 150 ports.

Painting I did of JAYHAWK, after members of the A3 crew launched and secured her in the Arkansas River in Wichita, Kansas.
JAYHAWK/USA9 was the first of 4, IACC yachts built by America3 for the '92 America's Cup. After winning the Cup, Bill Koch, who is from Kansas, donated it to the Wichita Boathouse, which is now a museum and home to the State of Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.
Just finished "Weekend at Waikiki" which is an updated digital version of an acrylic painting I did in the mid 70s titled "Waikiki Weekend"
