Do you remember Sindy? Our customer in NYC did. These are some of our oldest toys in the collection
The Pedigree (later Marx Toys) Sindy doll was officially introduced to little girls on Sunday 6th of September 1963 at 6pm with a 30 second TV commercial in the London area. She was the first UK toy ever to be advertised on television. She was Britain's answer to America's much more glamorous (and some would say brash) Barbie.
She quickly became Britain's best selling doll and was awarded 'Girls Toy of the Year' in 1968 and 1970.
Sindy was given a huge number of "scenesetter" items including: Comfortable bedroom furniture, smart kitchen units and with wall ovens and eye-level grills, bathrooms mirroring the fashion for colored suites (Sindy's 70s bathroom was a garish amber-yellow and brown), lounge and dinning room furniture, wall units, hostess trolleys and comfy sofas all reflecting the tastes of the time.
This Washing Machine one of the rarest pieces in this series. The washing machine was a 1979 addition to the Sindy line.
It was again made from harvest gold colored plastic to match the rest of Sindy's kitchen. It really works, with a battery operated timed washing programme which makes a realistic washing machine noise and causes the central black agitator paddle to twist and turn simulating a real “wash”. For the ease of emptying the machine, it has a working drain button which when pressed pumped the water into a slide-out container at the bottom of the machine. It is powered by two AA batteries.
Included with this Scenesetter is a yellow laundry basket.
