My name is Lily Serrao and I make linocut prints inspired by the plants and wildlife of Western North Carolina and the Southeast. I've always felt most myself when creating. And now I'm infusing my artwork with the knowledge and passion I gained through my botany degree and my work experience in ecological restoration.

Big Long Oak was once the largest and oldest tree in our neighborhood — a four-foot diameter northern red oak that stood watch over our home.

My son named it when he was five.

After Hurricane Helene, the tree began to lean toward our house and neighboring homes. We made the painful decision to have it taken down. A 30-foot snag remains standing — a memorial and a continuation, offering habitat to woodpeckers, owls, and countless insects.

This print was carved over more than 60 hours as an act of remembrance.

Each line was cut by hand into linoleum and printed in black ink to honor the stark strength and presence of the tree. The scale of the block allowed me to render the weight of its trunk, the lean that marked its final season, and the surrounding landscape that held it.
