Happy 112th Birthday, Girl Scouts! Juliette Gordon Low (1860-1927) was the founder of Girl Scouts. Family and friends knew her as Daisy.

Low launched the movement in Savannah, Georgia on March 12, 1912 when she registered the organization’s first 8 members. She devoted the rest of her life to building the organization and promoting international ties of friendship between girls.

Under Low’s guidance, the Girl Scouts grew from a 1,000 members in June 1914, to 5,000 thousand at the end of 1915 to 13,000 in early 1917. By the end of 1919 Girl Scouts had a membership of more than 40,000. According to Girls Scouts, there are 2.5 million Girl Scouts – 1.7 million girls and 750,000 adult members working as volunteers.

Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by U.S. Congress on March 16, 1950.

Here are some famous Girl Scout alums: Gloria Steinem, Billie Jean King, Venus Williams, Lucille Ball, Barbara Walters, Martha Stewart, Carrie Fisher, Reese Witherspoon and Tracee Ellis Ross, and Amy Poehler
