In a moment that seems like a scene straight out of a comedy—or a nightmare, depending on your appetite—shoppers have occasionally discovered a very unexpected "organic" ingredient in their pre-packaged salad: a live frog.
One of the most famous instances of this occurred when a customer at a major grocery chain opened a bag of spring mix only to find a small, bright green tree frog staring back at them from among the spinach and arugula.
Surprisingly, finding a stowaway in your salad is actually a testament to the reduction of heavy pesticides. In the modern agricultural industry, many farms have moved away from harsh chemicals, creating an environment where local wildlife, like frogs and crickets, can thrive.
While the washing and packaging process is incredibly rigorous, these tiny "hitchhikers" are experts at blending in.
Because they are cold-blooded, the refrigerated transport and display cases at the grocery store often put the frogs into a state of torpor (a deep sleep), only for them to "wake up" once they reach the warmth of a customer's kitchen.
