Born and raised in inner-city Detroit, BLK BOK grew up in a music filled house, surrounded by family members who were all musically inclined. By the age of 8, he was an acclaimed piano prodigy, winning statewide accolades and college level competitions.

We are so excited to kick off our How I Bloom Series this year and you’re in for a treat this Friday! Tune in this Friday at 7pm to watch interview Shanyse Strickland] about navigating her experiences in the Classical ecosystem.

About Shanyse:

Shanyse Strickland (Shanyse Strickland] ) “is a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, educator and songwriter.” Strickland “aims to bridge the world of classical and jazz music together, while also bridging the gap that exists between the African American community and classical music. In order to achieve both sides of the spectrum, Shanyse plans to release an original EP that takes excerpts from Classical music and surrounds them in a neo-soul/jazz context, giving the best of both worlds. Using elements of the Western European tradition, Shanyse aims to show that African Americans possess the ability to execute classical music well, in a way that does not eliminate the soulful joy that naturally stems from the skin that they are in.” - shanysestrickland.com

Chinyere Adah "Chi-Chi" OBE ( ) is a British double bassist and professor of Historical Double Bass Studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Nwanoku was a founder member and principal bassist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, a position she held for 30 years.

Lauren Anderson ( ) is an American ballet dancer and a former principal dancer with the Houston Ballet. In 1990, she was one of the first African-American ballerinas to become a principal for a major dance company, an important milestone in American ballet.

Aesha Ash ( ) is an American ballet dancer and teacher. She danced numerous leading roles with as a member of New York City Ballet's corps de ballet and as a soloist with Béjart Ballet and Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company. She is the creator of The Swans Dream Project, a non-profit that aims to convey the message to youths that beauty and talent are not constrained by race or socio-economic status.

Adeline Dunalp ( ) is a 12 year-old ballerina and multiword winner. Recently, she was awarded 1st place in Contemporary and 3rd place in Classical in her first year in the Junior category Semi-Final in Austin! Congratualtions Adeline and keep up the incredible work!!
