The exquisite castle in the background was taken from a page in the Très Riches Heures due Duc de Berry, a richly decorated book of hours from the fifteenth century. The book contained all the hourly prayers, as well as some of the most important and beautiful paintings and illuminations of that century.

"The words coming out of this angel’s mouth are purposely provocative and designed to make you wonder 'What does that mean?' It’s Latin, beatus est pisciculus, meaning 'Blessed is the little fish.' Floating fish symbolize the magic all around us and they are blessed little things themselves, to bring this magic into our lives. Is the angel blessing the fish or the fish blessing the angel? There are 1,327 named openings and variations to a match in The Oxford Companion to Chess, but how can a player remember any of them when the day’s spectators include a pair of dragons? “Actually, I don’t think anyone is worried about them at all,” laughs the artist James C Christensen. “They enjoy a well played game. It’s the little guys with the lances that get ornery when they are captured.”

Welcome to The Chess Match as imagined by James, the professor of the imagination. “These characters are quite passionate about the game. You’ll notice that they’ve incorporated the checkerboard pattern into their clothing and even onto the castle walls. But, they’ve only learned the game as distant observers, somewhat like you or me getting fascinated over a rugby match on the Aussie Channel. We could get all excited, run into the backyard and form up a scrum but we wouldn’t know the nuances of the game. Still, we’d have all sorts of fun and maybe even lose some teeth in the process.”

“For those who know me well and that think I’ve forgotten something here, I haven’t. Hidden in the forest are at least three (maybe more) fish adding their enchantment to the day’s festivities. After all, it wouldn’t be a Christensen without magic in the air….. And, oh, by the way, it’s red’s move.”

Exercise, anyone? Everyone? Up for sale is "Pilates", an exercise-oriented piece by James Christensen. Our first Pilates canvas has been sold, but another is up for sale. Don't let these pieces slip away, secure yours before we sell out.

James C. Christensen was born in 1942 and raised in Culver City, California. He studied painting at Brigham Young University as well as the University of California at Los Angeles before finishing his education at BYU. Opulent, colorful, and extraordinary are words that aptly portray Christensen's most popular artworks that have also been described as "creations from the land a little left of reality." When he isn't giving life to other's worlds, he paints a place of his own. The result is a unique kingdom where recognizable human emotions are often manifested as fish or fowl, utilizing the viewer's own imagination as no other artist can. "I don't think of myself as a fantasy artist," said Christensen, "I certainly have an affinity for myths, fables and ancient lore, but I also find time to create both beautiful women and landscapes."
