When Human Music Sounds Like AI

I had something interesting happen to me the other day & it stuck with me.

A friend sent me a modern metal album & my first reaction was:

"That sounds like AI.” Turns out, they’ve been a REAL band since 2014.

As a songwriter & producer whose wheelhouse is Rock & Metal, I found my reaction fascinating.

We spend a lot of time discussing AI music & the lack of authenticity it creates. But honestly, modern production has been moving toward perfection for years:

Quantized drums.
Sample replacement.
Pitch correction.
Editing every transient.
Removing every flaw.

Personally, I think there comes a point where the pursuit of perfection sucks the life out of a performance:

The pick scrape & guitar slide.
The singer gasping for air after an emotional line.
The drummer pushing a fill slightly ahead of the beat.

Those little imperfections are often what remind us there are real people behind the speakers.

What's interesting is that this pursuit of perfection hasn't just affected recordings, it's affected live performances for years.

Many modern productions are built in ways that can be difficult or, sometimes impossible to recreate exactly on stage without additional support, backing tracks, vocal reinforcement, synchronized production elements, or computers running alongside the band.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE great production & technology has opened incredible creative possibilities.

I also LOVE hearing the human element.

What struck me most was this:

I wasn't listening to AI. I was listening to a REAL band.

Yet my brain immediately associated that level of perfection with artificial intelligence.

AI & modern studio technology can be valuable tools. I just see a lot of over abuse of both when it comes the the Metal genre.

Which raises an interesting question:

Have we reached a point where human music is being produced so perfectly that the most seasoned listeners can mistake it for AI?

Or, borrowing a line from AC/DC...

With the NHL Stanley Cup Final continuing this week, it felt like a good time to revisit one of the strongest sports sync tracks.

Our track "Echoes" from our APM Music / Endgame album 'Dystopia' has generated 70+ tracked NHL broadcast detections, making it one of the most consistently used sports tracks we've written.

POWER SLAP 13 - Another recent cue sheet just came in.

Our song "Out of Context" by STEMM was used in Power Slap 13, the combat sports league founded by Dana White CEO of UFC

For those who know our history, that's especially meaningful.

Long before production music libraries, sync catalogs & Seeing Red Music, STEMM's music became closely associated with combat sports through our work with the UFC, including the long-running broadcast theme "Face the Pain."

It's great to see songs from that catalog continuing to find new life & new audiences.

Music placement isn't always about brand-new songs. Sometimes it's about creating music with enough energy & longevity to remain useful years later.

One thing that surprised us while building out the Seeing Red Music website is how often our music has appeared in tennis broadcasts.

Our song, “Echoes” for the APM Music / Endgame Library from our 'Dystopia' album has quietly become one of the strongest recurring sports sync tracks in our catalog through tennis broadcasts over the years.

With major tennis events ramping up this week, it felt like the perfect time to revisit some of those moments with bragging rights of 500+ tracked detections!

Even as we continue building Seeing Red Music, we’re still incredibly proud of & actively working with longtime partners like APM Music who have helped bring our music to audiences around the world for years.
