Today is Black Burlesque Day and I have something to say

It hasn't ever been easy. Despite all of the progress that's been made, yt performers still don't want us here. I've been bullied since I first stepped foot on stage in 2017, most often by those I've shared a stage with, shone a spotlight on, or provided a platform. Over the years, I've been referred to as "the help", been marked out on flyers, pushed out of shows and venues I frequented and worked with for years, I've been studied, copied, stolen from, and ganged up on repeatedly. In the current state of affairs, the bullying has only gotten worse, but like those who came before me, I'm resilient and I'm not going anywhere, so get used to seeing my Black ass, baby! 💅🏾

You see, for us, burlesque has never been about petty competition. It's always been about self love, the freedom to celebrate the skin we're in, and loving ourselves unconditionally the face of endless hate 💃🏽

So, here's to all of the courageous and powerful Black performers who paved the way, and to all those following in their footsteps 👣
