“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Revelation 3:20)

"Often times, I have heard this verse spoken in the context of evangelism, where people who do not know Jesus are told that he is standing at the door of their hearts, waiting for them to open and receive him. But the context of Revelation 3 shows that unbelievers are not the primary target of these words. Jesus issues this invitation directly after his words to the church at Laodicea, which is the final letter of the seven to the churches in Revelation 2-3, and it is the most hard-hitting of them all. Jesus calls this church lukewarm and threatens to spit them out of his mouth. He calls them wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. Not exactly the kind of warm and encouraging words we’d like to hear! But Jesus doesn’t finish his letter with this rebuke. He goes on in v.19 to frame this rebuke as an act of love: “those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.” And then he tells them he is standing at the door and knocking. So this invitation is given to the church: those who already follow Jesus, but have lost their way and have valued the wrong things, and have become lukewarm and unpalatable. Jesus says to them, and to all who need to hear this invitation today: I haven’t given up on you, I’m not walking away, but I’m giving you the chance to open your heart and life again to me. All that is needed in response is to hear Jesus’s words and realise they are for you, and then to respond with openness. The result is a relationship marked by warmth and hospitality: Jesus comes and eats with us and we with him. Our relationship with him is at the very centre of our life.
