Angelo Sherman Art Detroit visual artist Sherman quote:
" I came up during Hanna -Barbara cartoons, Pop- art movement, Motown music, great sports battles ,Blaxploitation films.

Angelo Sherman is a self taught American painter and is influenced by the works of post impressionist painters and the action painting movement . Identifying with the Action Painting Movement drips and splashes ..some of his paintings are based on his personal experience dreams and of growing up in the city of Detroit. All of this influenced my work, there's no real style or label." In High S

chool Sherman won several awards and an art scholarship to Ferris State in Big Rapids Michigan. Sherman did not take advantage
of this educational opportunity, and quit school with one semester from graduation, he did menial jobs washing windows, painting murals and signs. But before all of this.. one of the awards that was granted to him was a study of art history at the Detroit Institute Of Arts for the summer, as a teenager riding his bike or taking public transportation to the DIA...
little did he know that he would spend the next few decades at the museum
working ,first as a security officer and then later as a museum installation technician . In these positions Sherman was able to make studies, examinations and sketches of some of his favorite old master artists up close. The television outlets along with jazz music became a source of inspiration. Sherman also drew and painted n**e models. "When I have problems or been in a slump ,going directly to the human form quickly gets me out . A high school art teacher said "If you can paint the human shape and form you can paint anything." Originally Sherman was seriously considered being a cartoonist and was being groomed by his father to pursue this field. Later he turned to political cartooning ,and you can see a combination of impression ,abstract and forms of cartoons in his work. Angelo had the pleasure of meeting some of his art heroes while working at the museum ; Romare Bearden, Al Loving and a few more notables. Sherman painted mostly the black heroes of the day: from Muhammad Ali, Jack Johnson ,James Brown, Billie Holiday and any black person that was famous. After having shown his work in many Detroit galleries , Sherman continues to have his work exposed to broader audiences. He also collaborated on mural projects with several well known Detroit artists in 2003. Sherman credits the 15 year experience of working in a major museum environment , life observations and visiting the main library as keys to his evolving art education. Susan Sontag’s quote, “Real art has the capacity to make us nervous,” speaks to the transformative power of art.

It suggests that true art challenges our perceptions, provokes thought, and often confronts uncomfortable truths about humanity and society.

This capacity to evoke discomfort can be a catalyst for deeper understanding and reflection, pushing us to question our beliefs and the status quo. Sontag’s work often explored the relationship between art and experience, emphasizing that art should not only please but also disturb and inspire dialogue.
