Here is the second study from Ilya Repin's "Zaporozhy Cossacks Writing A Mocking Letter to the Turkish Sultan" from 1891. This Cossack is one of the more pensive of the group; I like to think he is looking enviously at the crowd of men that is overcome with laughter, and he is brewing a line of his own to see if he can't make them laugh even harder.

More face studies are in order. Recently I learned about Ilya Repin, a Russian/Ukrainian artist from the mid- to late 19th century. I'm not sure if he wasn't covered or I don't remember him from when I was studying in college, but I am glad I got to study his work now.

The painting that I am studying here is called "Zaporozhy Cossacks Writing A Mocking Letter To The Turkish Sultan" from 1891. When you look at the men Repin painted in the scene, you can tell by the looks on their faces that whatever they are writing is probably some beautifully creative string of venomous insults. The man that I picked out for this study has the best example of a belly laugh that I have ever seen painted. There are a few other faces that I am going to study in the future, and much more Repin to come.

Stop me if you've heard this before. But the current finished piece that I am working on is taking longer than I expected. Nighttime scenes demand far more marks, and the scene that I chose to create will be my most detailed work yet. That is to say, I won't likely be close to finishing it anytime soon. So you are going to see a lot more studies in the meantime, so I feel like I am finishing something in the time being.

My most recent drawing is titled "Marigold of Iberia." After having done the Flowers coloring book last year, I felt like I wanted to incorporate one into a ruin in the foreground with a landscape in the background.

This is probably the last piece I will get done this year. While I was aiming to get a total of 6 new pieces done and out the door this year, I have to say that I am very happy with the ones that I was able to complete. Three more are already in the works, in varying stages of completion, and I'm looking forward to sharing them soon.

This is the last week my work will be up at ! Swing by and grab a coffee before Saturday and check out this print, as well as my other work from this year.

This print was the first pen on paper drawing I’ve done in a while. Titled, “Dreams of Frederiksborg” it is a combination of Danish castle architecture that I got to see first hand this summer. It is also a very special gift that I am looking forward give next spring.

It’s finally complete after 9 months of work. Come check it out this November at , along with other works from this year...

June 12, Sketchbook Study

I found a great reference image of a man in a toga with perfect lighting. When I finally finish the lighthouse drawing and move on to the figure piece I've been wanting to get to, this sketch will be on the reference board for lighting.

May 2nd Sketch Study.
Napoleon Crossing The Alps (1801 Version), Jacques Louis David

Jacque Louis David made multiple versions of this painting that depicted Napoleon recreating the march that the Carthaginian general Hannibal had done nearly 2,000 years before the French would. In the foreground you can see Hannibal's name carved into the rock face of the Alps, right next to a freshly craved Napoleon.

This painting as well as other works by David glorified and helped to legitimize the new Emperor's reign over a unstable France. David’s other work like the Coronation of Napoleon, and the Oath of the Horatii ( a painting about the sacrifice of three brothers to save the city of Rome in its early years.) depicted the leader in a very favorable light, as well as promoted the ideal of sacrificing oneself for the greater good of the state.

Sketchbook Work From 4-25-25
Sketch Of Michelangelo's Moses From The Tomb Of Pope Julius II (1505 - 1545)

One of the six planned colossal statues that was to be part of the Tomb of Pope Julius II, this version of Moses is commonly known for the "horns" on his head. While Michelangelo does have a history of insulting those who he didn't like through his art (refer to the bottom right corner of the Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel),. A cardinal who insulted Michelangelo's work has been forever immortalized wearing donkey ears while having his ge****ls mauled by a snake.) It isn't likely that he was doing so here. The horns come from a mistranslation where the intended meaning was "radiant" but was misunderstood to be "horned."

Study of Caravaggio's "Saint Matthew and the Angel," Second Version, From 1602

Caravaggio is one of my favorite artists. And his second version of "Saint Matthew and the Angel" has to be one of my favorite works of his. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Caravaggio's work is dramatic lighting, and right after that would be dramatic poses.

The subject's pose nails the same pose that many people have found themselves doing plenty of times at their job. Someone is leering over your shoulder as you design, type, or calculate a solution for them. While I'm sure the look on his face is meant to be one of awe, I can't help but feel like his stare is saying, "Could you please make up your mind and give me some space to work?"

April 10th Sketchbook Study
Graphite on paper

I think this will be my last photographic study for a while. I want to study more classical painters and sculptors to get a better feel for how they put together a composition. There is always something that I can learn for a master.
