Life imitates art.

It’s amazing how such a small moment can inspire so much. Lately, I’ve noticed how fixated I can be on Apple Maps telling me exactly how long it will take to get somewhere. I hardly think to look outside at a stoplight, even when I’m driving through familiar places, like a street in Wilmington.

I hope this is a little reminder: there are stories unfolding around us every day. Sometimes, all it takes is looking out the window.

Sometimes, when the rain is heavy outside, I feel my ears becoming those little cups that leaves become when they catch falling water.

It never surprises me that poets find music in rain, in storms, in ravenous thunder.

Here’s a poem I caught while listening to a recent heavy downpour.

In this interview, I share the family lore of my third great-grandfather, his extraordinary and tragic life story, his family history, and the mysteries surrounding his descendants that inspired me to create this method.

A special thank you to Barbara and Hope for giving me the opportunity to share these techniques and this meaningful family story.

Happy National Haiku Day! I wanted to celebrate by sharing a piece of mine that I call, Out of Water. 🐟🎣🏜

I’ve been spending time reading Bashō and thinking more deeply about the haiku tradition, especially how much feeling such a small form can carry. This poem is my contemporary response to that influence in honor of todays recognition of the form.

Consider it a very small poem carrying a slightly unreasonable amount of existential weather!
