Willow Brook Barn just welcomed the very FIRST Medal of Honor Mural — featuring the legendary George Everette “Bud” Day — as it makes its way to its permanent home in Sioux City!

🎖️ This mural is a tribute to Bud Day’s valor, his time as a POW, and the sacrifice of all our POW/MIA heroes.

🚁 And it gets even better — the mural will stand proudly right alongside a YL-37 Vietnam-era Flying Memorial Helicopter, two tributes to America’s heroes side by side.

Come out to see it and snap a photo before it continues its journey home.

THE Medal of Honor Murals IS COMING TO WILLOW BROOK BARN IN COLO THIS FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND!!

The first Medal of Honor mural is complete. Kicking off this original series in Sioux City, Iowa, The Medal of Honor Murals project is a National Landmark honoring all 3,500 recipients along America’s Medal of Honor Highway painted by artist Ray Sorensen II.

Known throughout Iowa and the nation as “The Freedom Rock®” artist, Sorensen started this project after completing his 99 Iowa County Freedom Rock® Tour.
“People started asking me, ‘what’s next? We’ve taken the entire Iowa Tour and have even seen the ones in other states.’ I didn’t expect people to finish it that quick, but Covid really provided an opportunity for people to continue to get out during that time, social distance and visit the Freedom Rocks®. So, I decided to launch something that I have been dreaming about for years.” Sorensen said.

This 16 foot by 8 foot hand painted mural took Sorensen two and a half months to paint. It depicts Sioux City Native, U.S. Air Force Major George Everette “Bud” Day.
The Medal of Honor Murals Project is a national effort to honor America’s highest military heroes through permanent, hand-painted monuments placed along the historic Medal of Honor Highway. These large-scale mural panels stand as enduring tributes—connecting rural communities, historic towns, and travelers across the country through a shared legacy of courage, sacrifice, and freedom.

This piece will have a brief appearance in the city of Colo, Iowa where it will be on display to spread the message of the Medal of Honor Murals over the Fourth of July weekend.

On Saturday, July 4th, this remarkable mural will be displayed alongside the YL-37 Vietnam Era Flying Memorial, which will fly into Willow Brook Barn in Colo. Together, these two powerful tributes to America’s military heroes will be on static display from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., providing visitors with a unique opportunity to honor the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of those who have served our nation.

Vietnam Veterans Day 🇺🇸

March 29 is set aside to honor the men and women who served during the Vietnam War—a generation that didn’t always receive the welcome home they deserved.

Today, we pause to remember their sacrifice… and to say what should have been said all along:

Welcome home.

This piece reflects that moment across time—
a soldier still standing watch… and a veteran, years later, returning the salute.

More than 58,000 names are etched into that wall.
Each one a story. Each one a sacrifice. Each one never forgotten.

Today—Medal of Honor Day—hits a little different when you’re working on these.

Bud Day’s story… what he endured as a POW… it’s hard to even wrap your head around. Trying to capture that in paint has been humbling.

Next to it is a sketch of Darrell Lindsey—a reminder there are so many more stories that deserve to be told.

That’s the mission behind the Medal of Honor Mural Project.

Not just artwork—remembrance.

Not just history—legacy.

Before there were 3,528 Medals of Honor, there was one.

Awarded to Jacob Parrott during the Civil War, the first Medal of Honor marked the beginning of a legacy that continues to shape our nation.

That Medal is on view at the National Medal of Honor Museum through March 31. After that, it will rotate from display on the Exhibit Deck.

This is a moment to reflect on where it all began and how that first act of courage continues to shape us.

A special moment—one of our Freedom Rock Foundation board members (Frank) helping unload the first Medal of Honor panel.

These panels are massive, and this one marks the beginning of something we’ve dreamed about for a long time. We’re thankful for a temporary, temperature-controlled space to work in for now, and excited to begin primer once the grout has cured.

There’s no better way I can imagine starting America’s 250 than by honoring the bravest among us. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 250 Years of the United States Navy ⚓️

Today marks the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy, a force that has guarded our nation’s freedom across every ocean since 1775. From wooden ships under sail to today’s cutting-edge carriers and submarines, the Navy’s story is one of courage, innovation, and unwavering service.

I painted this mural to honor all who have worn Navy blue — those who’ve stood the watch, answered the call, and kept our nation safe from sea to shining sea.

I’ve been a little quiet on here, but behind the scenes the work continues, as we are reaching out to potential sponsors and finalizing the specs for the MoH Building! We want the building to be a dedicated studio space where the public can see these murals come to life and where Veterans will always have a place to gather.

This particular concept honors a Korean War Medal of Honor recipient and Iowan, Junior D. Edward’s, capturing both his portrait and the battlefield where his bravery was forever etched into history.
