To all those art nerds interested in ancient pigments here’s one.
Pompeiian Red:
Found on numerous archeologically uncovered frescos of Pompeii. This brilliant red color may not have been red when applied. Chemical analysis of the color suggests it may have been yellow ochre. Scientists have shown that when yellow ochre is exposed to intense heat the ochre pigment will change to a red color not dissimilar to the color on the Pompei frescos. The Vesuvius eruption that covered the city likely created this color change to the wonderful reds we see now. A similar red pigment, Ercolano Red can be found today in the Ercolano region, which also use to be Herculaneum, also destroyed by Vesuvius.

It’s been a minute posting anything art related. Been busy researching and searching for ancient dry pigments to create ultra low filler pastels. I’ve found a supplier for ancient, renaissance, and impressionist era pigments. Now starts the fun of experimenting with ingredient proportions.

Three colors made 11 more to try! These are yellow ochre, Pozzouli red from Italy, and Mars Red. Values created with zinc white and Roman black.

Started drawing the companion piece to the first set of books still life. I have some additional little reference lines and perspective tweaks, but it’s almost ready for the under painting.

Received a custom plein air brush carrier and art piece from Keith Zack, at Raven Custom Leatherworks, an old friend and talented craftsman! He does excellent leather work. I could not be more thrilled with these pieces!
