October 20, 1977. One of the darkest days in rock ‘n’ roll history.
49 years ago today, a plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi, taking the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and both pilots.
Just three days earlier, the band had released Street Survivors, an album that would forever be tied to the tragedy.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was at the height of its powers. Free Bird…Sweet Home Alabama…Simple Man…Tuesday’s Gone…songs that helped define a generation.
Nearly five decades later, their music and legacy live on.
Remembering all six lives lost on October 20, 1977. 🤘🏼
