When European scientists first examined a platypus, some thought it was fake.

And honestly, it is easy to understand why.

It looked like someone had stitched several animals together.

A duck’s bill.

A beaver-like tail.

Webbed feet.

Thick fur.

But the platypus gets even stranger.

It is a mammal that lays eggs.

Its milk is released through pores in its skin for its babies to drink.

Adult males have venomous spurs on their back legs.

When hunting underwater, the platypus closes its eyes, ears and nostrils.

Then it finds prey by sensing tiny electrical signals through its bill.

And under ultraviolet light, its fur glows blue-green.

It even lacks the powerful acid-producing stomach most mammals use to digest food.

Every new fact sounds invented.

But it is real.

The platypus is basically nature proving that rules are only suggestions.

Egg-laying.

Milk-producing.

Venomous.

Electricity-sensing.

UV-glowing.

No wonder the first scientists thought someone was playing a joke on them.
